[bolger] Re: Folding schooner sails

RB,

Does your FS have a 1/4" ply bottom. Do you experience any oil canning as so
many on this site atest to? The bottom of my FS is sheathed in glass and
epoxy, and the front half of the FS is sheathed on the inside as well. Do
you think the back half will oil can?

Do you happen to know where the CA FS is located?

Thanks Again!
Chuck
I was so enthused about the schooner that I purchased the sails two
years before the boat was finished. Philadelphia at the time had a
boat show in the old civic center and I bought the sails from Linthicum
Sails who gave me a boat show discount plus a 10% fall discount. This
was in 1976, so the sails only cost me $276 (that was a lot of money
back then). As far as I know, they are flat. I used the rope ties to
tie them to the mast for 20 years, then had the opportunity to buy five
mast hoops for $10. They really look traditional and do set the sail
nicely. The only drawback is that you have to line up the hoops and
feed the masts through them when setting up. But they do look nice! I
tried not to change anything while building, but added a mooring post
to the forward bhd of the front end so I could tie off the anchor. I
have not run across any other schooners except reading about one in
California, one in New York and one in Maryland. I do not race often,
but a recent newspaper article said the schooner "stole the show" going
around the buoys. Hope you have as much fun as I do!
