Re: Help identify this schooner
> Perhaps this is the same boat prior to the cabin?Maybe it comes from mixed origins? Parts are Bolger-ish, eg. the
glasshouse (pilot station?) (instead of a bubble?) before the
mainmast.
Parts are Benford, eg junk schooner sailplan - but that's just old
Chinese practice any way isn't it? The sheer seems too excessive to
me and midships freeboard too low to be a Benford "BADGER".
Parts may be Selway-Fisher. The cabintop and deck profile are sort
of like that of a PIONEER 21' Dory/Sharpie http://www.selway-
fisher.com/Yacht2024.htm (2nd from top, BTW while there take a peek
down-page at new pics of the YAMATO JAPANESE FISHING BOAT)
It's hard to judge the scale of the flickr boat - LOA is about 14
times the diameter of the life-ring on the quarter, but about 18
times the tyre on the mooring. Depending on those diameter
measurements it may be not much more than 25' at most.
The hull lines to the sheer, and laden freeboard, look very much
like a Len Hedges SALAR dory. An open boat may have been cabined and
decked. Here's a few pics of Col Peak's SALAR dory "Mary Bryant" -
His mate, Rob Blackburn, thinks he converted to a junk schooner rig
to get the feel before perhaps building a BADGER and sailing off...
on whatever income... < http://www.openboat.co.nz/ >Go to:
gallery06 page, 3/4 down-page. (Take a look at Martin Kortluke's
FOLDING SCHOONER "Mostly Harmless" in gallery05, 1/3 down-page!
This one cuts it with multis!)

I kinda think of a PB&F ANHINGA as a half-decked cabined "square
dory" more than a sharpie or canoe ;-)

It is certainly not Bolger or Benford. It is most likely a junk-rigged
vessel inspired by (but not nearly as lovely as) Allen Farrell's well
known "China Cloud". Allen and Sharie Farrell were well known along
the Pacific Northwest and Alaskan coast. The three masted junk China
Cloud was designed and built by Allen and was their home for many years.

Hi, Bruce -
Well, Fulford Harbor isn't >that< far from Echo Bay - less than 100
miles. I bet it's the same boat. IIRC, the builder (forget his name)
built the dory and then just kept going. The pic you show has higher
freeboard than the junk. Of course he could have taken a plank off...

-Wooden Boat Show Port Townsend, Wa. 2004, Lady Washington in the

shouldn't be sharing pictures like that. People might get the idea that

Spring Island, British Columbia.
Perhaps this is the same boat prior to the cabin?

There's no location information for this boat, but It's a dead ringer
for a junk rigged dory we met a couple of years ago at Echo Bay in BC.
If true, it started life as a St Pierre dory and kinda grew from there.
The builder is an easy going sort and just did what moved him as he
worked along. The little hatch just forward of the after mast is the
pilot station. He stands on top of the Saab engine with his head in the
hatch to navigate in inclement weather (which, as we all know in the
Pacific Northwest is 24/365 rain, fog and intermittent sleet). IIRC, the
boat's name is Rose something or something Rose. He's been all over the
place in her.
Peter McCorison, suffering a moment of sunshine in an otherwise pleasant
summer of intermittent rain in the San Juan Islands.

Help please to identify this schooner. My buddy says it looks like a
Bolger, but I don't think so. More like a modified Benford Badger. I
am guessing those are balanced lugs under the sail wraps, but I am
still guessing. In anycase she looks quite seaworthy.
