Re: [bolger] Re: Stuck swing keel on Bolger Bobcat

Gee -- I'd surely be careful about the sledge hammer approach. If the
problem is waterlogged, swollen wood in the centerboard, you might
inadvertently hammer out parts of the centerboard trunk you'd prefer to
leave attached to the boat. I'd be more inclined (if it is at all
feasible) to pull the boat up onto a beach and let it dry out on its
side for a couple days and then see about tapping the board loose.

Bruce,

Thank you for the response and diagram.
I had tryed with a 2# sledge to lower it to that position.
I will try with a larger sledge to lower it to the position needed to
take it out as you mentioned.

Ron

The entire boat, dripping wet, cannot weigh more than 450-500 pounds.
Looking at the Bolger plans, I deduce a dry weight of about 390 lbs.
(Drawn displacement of 690lbs, less 2x150lbs people.)

Hey! I've sailed that same boat! It was pretty good build I thought.
My only fear about it was I thought you could lose a finger in in the
holes on the centerboard if you were careless in lowering it... ;)

The board probably swelled up due to being in the water all the time.
The best solution would be dry it out. Only I'm not sure how you'll
get it on a trailer to dry it out with the board stuck in the down
position... Anyone?
Just brainstorming this, head to shallow water, lift the fore end of
the board off the pivot pin and drop the board down.

Here is a diagram of the pivot pin arrangement.

I own Flynn's Folly 1999 Bolger Bobcat. I have kept it on a mooring
this summer, and now the centerboard/swing keel won't come back up.
Any suggestions on how to handle/fix it?????????
