Re: Wooden Boat Show

Michael,
I was sorely tempted to make the drive to Mystic, but with two
good
days of weather I went boatbuilding instead.
I figured that the cost of driving, meals, admission, souveigneers
(sp?) would total the cost of two more sheets of marine ply!!! That
becomes a "no brainer" for me.
Firefly is now three dimensional, braced (I hope I did this
right)
and ready to be flipped for applying the bottom. I took about 6
hours to get everything exactly where I wanted it, including buying
some CDX for bracing. The weather looks good for outside work, so
she
will live under tarps when the rain comes. Once the bottom is on, I
will glass it.
Hopefully, I will go to the Wooden Boat Show in style next year.

nights as MICRO does look like a small ark.)
Went to the Wooden Boat Show in Mystic CT on Saturday. Fortunately my
wife understands my wooden boat building obsession and kept my three
young children busy whenever they tried to interrupt my steadfast
pilgrimage through all the exhibits. Highlights in the morning included
meeting Sam Devlin abord a Tobknot 32' cruiser and seeing both W Class
boats designed by Joel White side by side.

Early in the afternoon as the family was aboard the Charles W. Morgan
whaling ship, I spotted a dark colored electric launch with a canvas
umbrella making its way along the Mystic river at a good clip. Later in
the afternoon as we were waiting our turn for a ride in the Seaports
launch I saw the small electric launch tied up to one of the Seaports
docks.

I went down to the docks to get a closer look. The launch looked like
Phil Bolgers Lily. The varnished woodwork needed some work and the
forward light was rusted. This definately was a boat that was used, not
a showpiece like the boats docked around it. Further examination
revealed that the boat was registered in Mass. and the boats name was
Lily. THIS MUST BE PHIL'S BOAT AND HE MUST BE HERE!! I hung around for
a while as my son was preocupied watching a chris chraft type boat rev
its engine.

Sure enough as I turned my attention back to Lily, Phil and Susanne had
quickly boarded and were off for a ride. A fellow near me also
recognized Phil and called out his name. Myself, I would not even try
to speak to the Bolgers as I'm sure they wanted to enjoy the show in
piece and quiet as my wife was attempting to allow for myself.

About 10 minutes later as my family was boarding the Mystic Launch for
our ride, Phil and Susanne rode by in Lily. I pointed out to my wife
the man that was responsible for the two boats that I have completed
(Windsprint and Tortoise) and the two under construction (Oldshoe and
Nymph) in the garage. I also realized that I should stop delaying the
Windsprint launch this year as she is really meant to be used, not
looked at.
