RE: [bolger] Big Screw ups!

Some years ago I took a short course and built a fibreglass kayak using
polyester resin. We were told that if our resin didn't harden up properly,
to leave the kayak out in the sun and it would finish the job. But be
careful if covering a concave curve (like the inside of a cedar strip canoe)
as polyester shrinks as it cures and may pull off the surface if it cures
too quickly -- speaking from experience.

Subject: [bolger] Big Screw ups!

Hi All,
A while back some of us were relating there biggest boo-boos in boat
building. Well, I have one to add to the, Mistake-o-rama.
Having completed the full size hatch that covers the Birdwatcher slit
in the cabin top, and wanting to save my West system epoxy for more
important things, I elected to use the cheap auto parts stuff to fiber
glass the hatch. I mixed for a slow cure, and got it done just before
dark. Since it was time to eat, I left it on the picnic table and went
into the house for dinner. It must have been a good dinner, because I
forgot all about it being left out, and did we ever get rain. A duck
drowner!
Note for builders: If you ever want to stop polyester rosin from
setting up, drown it.
Since that fatal night, I had tried everything to get it to kick,
from covering it with a coat mixed for a quick cure, up to finally
painting it with straight hardener right out of the tube. Well, it took
two weeks, but at last, I did get it to kick, so now I can get back to
working on the boat.
I can't wait to paint it, to see if the paint dries. ;-)
Best regards, Stan, Stern Wheeler, Micro Tugger, Snow Goose.
