Re: SF Oil Spill
I ride the ferry from Vallejo to San Francisco M-F. For the first two
days after the spill the whole downtown area smelled of Bunker Oil. It
was nasty and was similar to the smell of a roof being tarred. Many
buildings downtown had the a/c set on recirculate, since the fresh air
from outside made everyone's eyes burn.
The Oil was in globs for the first few days and left a sheen on the
water. The second day of the spill, the bay had huge stinking masses
of oil that the ferry went through.
I've heard that the Berkeley Marina was hit pretty hard, as were most
beaches and shoreline of the bay proper. And yes, the oil has migrated
out the Gate and has impacted the coast in a major way, as well as the
fishing grounds. Fishing and crabbing in the affected areas is now closed.
It's a major bummer.

I think it was a product tanker with some light fraction like fuel oil. If
so, 58000 gallons would cover many square miles because it disperses into
very thin films.
The description I heard on the radio included diving birds getting under the
slick and surfacing under it. This implies that wind and wave action have
fragmented the slick, further spreading its effect.

on the ocean about 15 miles south of the Golden Gate and today they
closed all the beaches. I guess a lot of oil got sucked out of the SF
Bay. 58,000 gallons is how much? Equivalent of about ten tanker
trucks I think. A lot, but not exactly the Exxon Valdez. Like I
said, my Micro Navigator marina berth, one mile from the accident has
only small 'walnut size' blobs few and far between.

Bruce,
The news we get here on the East coast is that the spill is affecting a
large expanse of the Bay and coastline. Here is a link to a Google Map
indicating the stricken areas.
