Re: Stretched dory in a steep chop

Howdy, I was thinking of dropping it in the water at Sausalito, then
heading over to the GG bridge area. Whereabouts in Petaluma do you
keep your dory? Mine is tied up to my sailboat at the marina. Tried
to email you but haven't figured out how this wholw system works yet.

Tom, I am in Lewes, where are you? Unfortunately, I
built that boat out of what was supposed to be
"exterior" luan underlayment, which delaminated. I
gave her to a guy who was going to try to fix her up,
but she was too far gone. This is a beautiful boat
and a pleasure to row, and I could kick myself for
having built her cheap. She is easy to build. If you
want to talk about construction, etc., just email me
directly.

Hi Sam,

I live in Delaware and I am thinking of building the Stretched Dory.
Do you live near the DE Bay and do you still have the Dory?

I have rowed a stretch dory in Delaware Bay, which is
also known for a steep chop, although I never had her
out in a breaking chop. The dory is so light in the
ends that she pops over pretty steep stuff without
problems, despite the fine entry. The bigger problem
is that the boat is so light, the rower is pitched
around like the bean in the maraca. She is better
with some extra weight, if it is kept out of the ends.
You have a beautiful boat, and if like mine she will
row like a dream. Sam

This is the 19 ft. Bolger stretched dory. I launched her a few weeks
ago, she rows great. Ready to try out San Francisco Bay. Here is my
concern. On the Bay, a steep chop can pick up momentarily, up to 3 to
4 ft., curling, whitecaps. Can anyone tell me how the stretched dory
would handle those conditions? My concern is that because of the fine
bow and the length, she would bury her nose and swamp. Distance
between crests is quite short, being on the Bay. This boat would
handle fine in the ocean, but the Bay conditions are in some ways more
hazardous. I have been rowing boats in the ocean since I was 16, but
this is my first experience with an open boat of this length, with such
fine ends.
