Re: [bolger] Re: Another eBay Bolger "Which-one-is-it"

Hi all if you look close at the photo it looks like it is sitting under the hull. You can see a shadow under the the hull and on top of the board on one side. It could be something on the trailer and not on the boat.

Blessings to all

They look like pieces of plywood to me. Probably that's all they are,
added on to to help the boat plane without squatting. Just my guess,
but look at how little aft planing surface there is on this boat
without them. I suspect the boat will squat terribly without this
extra planing surface.

As I work through the rebuild on Esther Mae, one of the items will be to
remove the exiting squat boards. They are not adjustable and were built
from MDO, with glass having been put on the bottom only. This left the
edges of the sheet exposed and the worm borers have had a field day this
last summer. I left her in the water for three weeks, and with the recent
drought here in SW Florida the salinity of the Caloosahatchee has gone up to
19 ppt, about half that of the Gulf of Mexico. This has allowed for many
free floating organisms that normally stay towards the gulf to travel 20
miles upstream, and in my case infest the squat boards. I will be removing
them and making notes on the effects of their absence. They represent
roughly an additional four square feet on the stern of the boat, directly at
the location of the outboard. If there is a noticeable difference and it is
negative then I will consider new trim tabs with some form of manual
adjustment.

To me, it doesn't really look like one of Bolger's Texas Dories. The bow
doesn't have the rake he was partial to back then, and the internal
motor well isn't in his style either. The Texas Dory design closest to
this one is probably Cofer's Carolina Dory: 19' 3" x 5' 10-1/2" which
has a transom very much like this one. More curve to the sheer than this
boat, though, and less flare at the bow.

I would guess that is a lapstrake Texas Dory. Seeing the photos I
notice how narrow she is.
Now you mention it Harry, it does look like something from that era.
I don't have the Texas Dories catalogue.

"Strip plank" had me thinking for some reason that it was from a much
more recent time, but if you look close (esp photo 4) it actually has
lapstrake or clinker topsides.

Do you think those huge trim tab thingies are adjustable on the go?
