Re: [bolger] Re: -Car top boat weight?

for a guy that large...you might wanta think about gettin' a burro, maybe a
small horse.

Speaking of Cartoper, do you think it would be a comfortable goat for a 6' 3" guy and one companion?

I car topped a 13'10" 130lb Laser all over North America, and I never
had a problem, at all, getting it on or off of the truck by myself.
The secret is to lift one end at a time . . . .
Good luck!

I am roughly same ht & wt. 100lb would not be too much of a stretch if
properly done. 120 would be too much, so not much room for growth. Watch
the weight rating on the rack. My Outback wagon is rated for 100lb.
Remember that you must also carry the rig.
Unless you have an overwhelming need to roll your own, I think you should
consider something like "Cartopper" available from H.H. Payson at

I'm trying to design / build a sailboat to explore Casco bay and the
New meadows aria.
I have settled on a 12 foot flat bottom stitch and glue skiff.
However, if I build out of 5.2 mm plywood at 20 lbs per sheet, then by
the time I add air boxes and decks to make the hull stiff and buoyant,
adding glass and glue it is close to 100 lbs. I am 72" and 200 lbs.
Is this boat too heavy for me to use as a cartoper?
I usually hear 80 lbs as a rule of thumb, but how much of a stretch is

that. Should be able easy enough to get it around 75 lbs. You'll be
alot happier lifting that on the roof than a hundred pounder. That and
few roof racks these days will hold 100 lbs. happily.
