FWIW Mike, I've had them cut sails before, and they can [and at that
time would] adjust the sail shaping parameters to suit the customer's
wishes. I suggest giving them a call.
Hi Mike, My wife is putting together a sailrite kit now and is nearly
finished with the machine sewing though there is hand work yet to be
done. We are really happy with the kit. Every little needed piece is
included and the directions a very good. We are sewing with a straight
stitch machine which sailrite says is just as good as Zig Zag. I
believe them as there were no zig zag machines when I was a boy sailing.
The one thing we worried about was accuracy in the seams with the
sewing. Acuracy in sewing doesn't matter that much though except for
looks.. The seams are marked and you put the material on the floor
where the edges are taped together overlapped to the machine drawn
lines. The taping is where the accuracy comes in, then it doesn't
matter if the stitching is straight or not because it only holds
together and accurately assembled sail.
Except for the straight stitching I don't think anyone can tell our
sails aren't made by a proffesional.
My wife has a sailrite machine and it can sew through about eight
layers plus webbing in the reinforced corners. I don;t think that can be
done with a regular household machine. Those reinforcement corners
could be taken to a canvas shop to be sewn or you can sew then by hand
with a sailmakers palm. That is eaysier than it sounds but is time
consuming. Here again accuracy is not important except for looks.
It's a great product.

Howdy-

I'm considering getting a new mainsail for my Martha Jane - I notice that the Sailrite
company sells them. Anybody use them for a balanced lug sail? If so, was the belly cut deep
enough?

Feel free to email me directly if you prefer not to post comments to the list.

thank you.
