Re: 1952 Sport Fisherman in Yachting magazine/Egg Harbor

An interesting observation. In a steep following sea, the forefoot
can dig into the wave in front of the boat and the buoyant stern,
lifted by the wave behind it, tries to overtake the bow.

The isometrics of the 1952 Sports Fisherman that Bruce H. has made
available to us show just how extreme this design was in its fine
entrance and broad flat underbody aft. There are several similar
hulls in Bolger's books.

My recollection from a book written by Lindsay Lord I read many
years ago is that he believed planing hulls should not be too fine
or deep forward and that midships deadrise should be carried right
through to the transom. It seems to me Bolger, who worked for Lord
(see the original post), may have decided that just the opposite was
better, in large part because he liked to take a contrary point of
view, as he has done so often since.

The large skeg and adequate rudder seen in Bruce's rendition help to
prevent broaching in a following sea. Bolger has moved towards
constant deadrise in his more recent designs, such as Shivaree, and
even with his simple plywood designs like Diablo.

Are there line drawings, or photos, of Bolger's Egg Harbor 31' anywhere?
From this article:

...
From the late 1950s through the 60s, Egg Harbor was at the top of its
game. In 1957 Boyd asked Martin to design a 30-footer, but the fee he
offered was too low; he asked the same of Phil Bolger, who apparently
worked cheaper. Today, Bolger is better known as the designer of
innovative sailboats, but early in his career he worked with both
Lindsay Lord and John Hacker. Bolgers design became the Egg Harbor 31;
the first one, with a black hull, cream house tops and bright
coamings, was launched in May, 1957. In the Spring, 1983, issue of
Nautical Quarterly, Joseph Gribbins quoted Bolger on the 31: "My boast
is that it was about two years before any of them came on the used
boat market, and then they sold for more than they had originally."
Egg Harbor eventually built more than 100 of Bolgers 31-footers.

Some people thought the Egg Harbor 31 less than ideal, though. "The
boat had a very fine entrance, and a wide stern," said Martin, not a
good design for the obstreperous New Jersey inlets.

Am I correct that one of the 1950's Egg Harbor hulls
was a PB design? There is one locally I am wondering
about. Does anybody know which Egg was his?

See above for isometrics of the 1952 Sports Fisherman, Phil Bolger's
first published design (in the January 1952 issue of Yachting
Magazine).

After having modeled many of PCB's boats I have gotten a sense of a
'Bolger style' and I was surprised to find that the 'Bolger style' is
readily apparent even in this early boat done by a 24 year old PCB.

The magazine published Bolger designs are will known in the
1979's-1991 (Small Boat Journal), and from 1991 to the present in MAIB
magazine.

But, what is known about PCB's magazine publishing from 1952-1979?
Does anybody here know what magazines he published in during those
three decades?
