Copyright
List,
A quick trip to ask.com revealed this definition:
"copyright
the exclusive, legally secured right to publish, reproduce, and sell the
matter and form of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work."
Under our discussion, I would propose that we are interested in the
"artistic work" portion of the statement. That is, a boat plan is an
artistic work. The book containing the boat plans is also an artistic work.
The copy right notice in BWAOM says "All rights reserved". Those "rights"
are to "publish, reproduce and sell the matter and form of the --- artistic
work. To me this means the plans and descriptions. i cannot see an implied
or actual extension to using the "artistic work" to fabricate something. I
AM NOT AN ATTOURNEY - I HAVE NO SPECIAL SKILLS OR BACKGROUND IN COPYRIGHT
LAW (capitalization is for emphasis only). In my extremely casual contact
with law, I have always found it to have logical basis. If it says it, it
means it. A point that was made in a business law course - in a different
century - was: "If two people agree on a contract - that is what the
contract means. If they don't agree the contract is what a JUDGE thinks it
means". I realize that we are not discussing contracts, but I think the
concept is sound.
I think the most beautiful thing said in the discussion was "Ethics protect
the designer.".
