Re: [bolger] Re: Bobcat isometric

Thanks,

I was particularly curious to know about cutting the taper. The mast is
a little long for a taper guide.

Hi Chris,

No, sorry I have no more photos of tapering and rounding the mast, but
can give you a more detailed explanation of what I did. The
dimensioned lumber I had, straight grain douglas fir, was not exactly
thick enough 1 1/2" to make both mast halves so the blank ended up
with two thin strips glued between each half to get the final 3 1/2"
hollow square section.

I marked the taper from 2 1/2" diameter at mast head down to 3 1/2" 6'
below, and marked taper from below deck to the octagonal section at
the mast step. Using a circular saw I was unable to cut all the way
through with one pass, so had to make 8 cuts rather than just four,
and had to clean up a bit with a block plane afterward. Somehow
managed to stay outside the lines and ended up with a tapered square
section blank to work from.

Using a homemade spar marking gauge, something like two pencils
between two posts, I marked the lines on each of the four faces to cut
each corner down to make the tapered eight sided blank. I don't
recall for sure, but must have set the circular saw blade at a 45
degree angle to make the 4 to 8 sided cuts. Then planed those corners
off to make it 16 sided and by eye to 32 and with those corners
knocked off slightly it was nearly round.

To get to the final round and smooth shape I made a homemade inside
out belt sander. Using a threaded rod with some nuts and washers a 3"
long bit of closet pole wrapped with rubber from and old inner-tube
and metal tube for a handle to chuck into a drill motor. With this
contraption to spin the inside out sander belt it was not too long
before it rounded up nicely.

Very nice, both the site and the boat. I particularly like the
reflection of the trailer in the hull paint.

Do you have detail photos of tapering and rounding the mast?

Hi,

Here is a link to a web site with some photos and details on building
the Bolger Bobcat, which I hope might interest some of you.
http://pages. <http://pages.sbcglobal.net/dkp390/boat3_site/index.htm>

It can be built from plans in the book "Build the instant catboat",
plans available from the author Harald Payson, or directly from Phil
Bolger and friends.

At the instant boat web page, you can buy plans, sail, and a book on how to build this specific boat. I have the book, and it has a lot of detail. If you buy from Payson direct, he will usually autograph a copy for you. It is one of the prettiest little boats I have ever seen.

Nice little boat. I went to Duckworks and couldn't
find a price for the plans.

Do you know how much they are and who sells them?
