Re: [bolger] Re: Chebacco 'versions'
Well, the first thing I would do would be to order a set of plans from PCB or Payson. They are not that expensive, particularly when you consider what you will spend in paint brushes and sandpaper (to say nothing of wood, epoxy, sails, and hardware). While you are waiting on the plans, find a measured dimension on the book plans for 1 foot, figure out the percentage necessary to enlarge the plans to a useable scale, and take the book to a copy shop to enlarge the plans by that percentage. With the enlarged plans, you can draw 'cartoons' with whatever accomodations you choose.
My experience has been that all boats are a compromise and that a change which produces a gain in one area almost always produces a corresponding loss in another area! A longer cabin means a shorter cockpit and concentrates crew weight aft. The result may suit your needs, but think it through before you commit to a significant change.

Hello. I've read some of your adventures on the Chebacco page.
Always inspiring, though back East here there is no setting quite so
pretty to sail in! I'm hoping to end up in Chincoteague Bay, scooting
around the thin water there.
It'll most likely be just my wife and I and the kid, who is 7 now, and
will likely be 8 or 9 before she sails in it.
I've emailed Mr. Payson, and sent a fax to Bolger & Friends about the
mast tabernacle. I think I can get by with smaller modifications such
as the quarter-lockers and fiddling with the cabin roof, but I'd like
to have the mast tabernacle officialized somehow before I mess with it.
I've found that if I photocopy the plans in Payson's latest book at
123% zoom it works out just right to pick off dimensions on a 3/8"
scale rule. I probably wouldn't actually build to this, but it's
helping me to lay out the pieces on the 'imaginary' plywood for
minimal waste while I'm waiting for the real thing.
I'll try to email Ben tomorrow as well.
Thanks for the info. Hope to see some updates on the Chebacco website
soon. (Maybe even contribute some!)

Hello from a sheet-ply Chebacco sailor.
Ben's email is in the registry on the Chebacco page, try
ben.ho@...
He'll be the best source for information as I expect he made his own
mods, most people do. I built mine as designed and have had no
problems using it as a cruiser for two six-footers for week at a
time. We've cruised with three, you need a boom tent and some
patience, but I think we could manage four. We've slept four but we
were at the dock at the time so it doesn't really count.
You will have access to under-seat storage as designed. You can
reach the forward half from the cabin, and a circular plastic screw-
in hatch gives access to the back half -- although I don't think I've
ever needed the space. Put in the rear deck lockers though, those
will swallow all the light and bulky stuff and never seem to fill
right up.
I think Payson sells the sheet-ply plans for a lot less than Bolger
does. I got mine from Bolger and contacted him once with some
questions, got a prompt reply but I hear he's not so responsive now
that he's "and friends". Plans are well worth the cost, you can lift
dimensions right off them with a scale rule -- you have to at times,
since there's no building guide.
Payson's latest book includes a building guide put together by Bill
Samson, who started the original Chebacco News. Bill's original
building info is on the Chebacco site, long with lots of other
information plus contacts for other builders.
http://www.chebacco.com/but you probably knew that already.
It's a great boat, go for it!

I recommend writing to PB&F directly. There are the more famous
standard Chebacco variations, but there is also a relatively obscure
Ben Ho 'raised deck' version #575RD with the Birdwatcher style hatch
written up in MAIB V22N17. I am guessing that this version of the
plans is only available directly from the designer?

Hi, first post here.
Well, after much deliberation, we've pretty much decided to build
Chebacco as our family camping boat. The problem is, havuing now made
that decision (and believe me it took a year)we're now faced with
'which' Chebacco to build!
I've already decided that the sheet-ply version will fit our needs,
building experience, and budget for time and money. However, I'd LOVE
to have some features to make camping a bit nicer for the family. In
particular, the bigger cabin, storage cockpit seats, and lexan forward
hatch ala Ben Ho's 'Three Rivers', would be exactly what I'm looking
for, albeit on the sheet-ply hull.
The problem is, how do I go about ordering plans for such a beast? I
have the older sheet ply plans, (in some deliberately non-scale form,)
in the back of the newer Payson book. But on these plans, the mast is
a bit aft of where it is nowadays and the cabin is in the old 'low
profile' position.
Basically, I want Ben Ho's bigger cabin on the sheet-ply Chebacco 20,
but I don't know where to turn for that 'version.'
Any suggestions?
