I agree, and the plate on the rudder is difficult to see on the
drawing, I missed it.
I guess you missed it too...

The rudder should have a "bottom plate." Phil says it's one of his "signature features." When Phil saw my boat, he pointed out that I didn't put the plate on mine. I think it makes a difference in the steering. I plan on adding it, or building a new rudder, at my next haulout.

My guess is that the bottom plate helps maintain steering control when the boat is heeled and the rudder angle changes. It seems to "focus" the flow of water as it passes the rudder, preventing water flowing "down" away from the blade.

I have noticed difficulty steering under certain conditions. I am hoping that adding the plate will help.
