Re: Blackburn Challenge and Gloucester Light Dory

If I were you I'd mess around with borrowed or wooden oars before I
made that kind of a commitment to see what was a good length.
Especially over a long distance in a headwind. Or have you already
done this. Maybe you could have an extra pair of slightly different
length in case conditions change.

I should think lots of water and a something carbohydrate to eat
would
help. THe human powered airplanes on long flights provided pilots
with
some kind of glucose drink. I remember being recharged by honey on a
cold winter hike with inadequate equipment, another time by M&Ms in
similar circumstances. But I suspect cold will not be the problem. If
it's hot you may go thru 2 gallons of water! I went thru 1.5 the
other
day without exerting myself nearly as hard.

I know that I am too late for this year's Blackburn Challenge, but I
thought I'd row my light dory in next year's race. ( I noticed that
two rowed in the 1999 event) Can someone suggest some thing that I
could do to make the GLD a little faster over the 21 miles? I'm
going to find some 8' carbon oars, and I'd like to use some better
oar locks than the common open bronze ones which I currently have. I
have installed good foot stretchers. Any suggestions for what gear
to take?

I'll do a bit of training and see how it goes.
