Birdwatcher question - performance

Bob -

You have done a great job with documenting the whole process for
building the BW II. I have the plans unrolled, and actually built the
mast already, but before I continue would like to know more about
actual performance of this boat, specifically pointing ability and
stability downwind.

I did read about your desire for an additional set of reefing points
and would love to hear more.

Thanks a lot.

David Jost, Boston
Thanks, Graeme. Yes, the mast is retained by a gate. On mine, the
gate at the coaming has a heavy hinge and two sliding "bolts." The
mast weighs 33 lb and being so short can go up or down in about 30
seconds. That system is great. It is also equally easy in the water
or on the trailer.

Several people have suggested building a 27 ft mast and not using the
yard. Relative to mast raising, that would move the balance point of
the mast so far out as to greatly complicate things. Of course, the
extra weight would be a factor, as well.

Another issue with the gate is water leakage. Sealing the thing is
impossible. I have gone to a tray mounted inside with a tube running
into the CB trunk. This has worked well.

Cheers, Bob

Nice one Bob. Stone the crows, there's some clever people here.

I just noticed something on your BW2 model I've missed before in any
photos: on BW2 the mast apparently stands outside the slot and passes
through the deck. Does this make it difficult to handle? Do you have to
stand up on deck to lower it in or strike it? (I suppose there's some
kind of gate at the slot coaming...?)

I have wanted to learn to use FREE!ship for somewhile. My main goal is
to better understand parameters, such as resistance and stability. But,
this was one of the "never quite get around to it" deals. Then, the
wonderful models from Bruce Hallman spurred me on to trying FREE!ship
on the Birdwatcher-2. My skills are not quite there, but you should
have seen my first tries! The learning experience has been rewarding.

My hope is to follow this with the performance parametrs, but that
still needs some polishing!
