Re: [bolger] Re: Bolger's Landing Craft for the USMC?

There are also several large oceangoing ships registered in Switzerland (Even if they can not reach the own poirt of registry). For many years, Switzerland was also operating a very powerful marine radio communication center (Bern Radio - Call sign HEB) that was used for ship to shore communications.

You may laugh, but there is a Swiss "Navy" which patrols the large lakes
(Lac Leman/Lake Geneva is an international lake sharing a long border
with France, Lugano and Maggiore share a long border with Italy,
Constance/Konstanz/ Bodensee with Austria and Germany).

Also there is a Merchant Marine, and Switzerland has significant marine
traffic, as the town of Basel is connected vie the Rhine River to
Rotterdam and thus the North Sea, and thus the North Atlantic.

OK, more about Switzerland than you may need.

SORRY ABOUT THE "ALL CAPS" BUT MY WAR WOUNDS HAVE CAUGHT UP TO ME ALMOST
FORTY YEARS LATER AND I AM SORT OF VISUALLY IMPARED. IT'S LIFE, AND NOT
ANYTHING TO BITCH ABOUT.

THE LANDING CRAFT MAY BECOME QUITE USEFUL IN AFGANISTAN IF THE GLACIAL
ICECAP ON THE HINDU KUSH CONTINUES TO MELT DOWN. IF NOTHING ELSE, WE CAN
USE THEM ON WHAT IS LEFT OF THE CASPIAN SEA TO RESUPPLY GEORGIA IF THINGS
GET MEAN WITH THE RUSSIANS AT THE BLACK SEA PORTS.

BE NICE TO KNOW IF THEY ARE DEPLOYABLE VIA AIRLIFT FROM A C-5 OR C-17? BUT
IF YOU KNOW DON'T TELL ME VIA INTERNET, AS IT WOULD BE CRAZY TO LET THE INFO
LEAK OUT TO THE WORLD. HUSH, HUSH IS THE WORD FOR STRATEGIC SYSTEMS LIKE
LANDING CRAFT!

Indeed. I hear they're planning to send the Swiss Marines instead,
for just that reason.

Late last year Popular Mechanics,(at least I think it was,I read a lot
of magazines)had a big article on a newly designed landing craft for
the military. It addressed the problems of the old landing craft,
that of being to slow (7 knots) and then dumping the poor guys right
on the open beach to get mowed down. The new design was amphibious.
Capable of speeds of something like 40 knots on the water, on reaching
land it was now a battle tank, capable of much higher speeds and
enough fuel to move inland for 600 miles. I don't remember the exact
figures, but I'm in the ballpark; and it was very impressive. I have
no idea if this was Bolger's design or not. My point is that
apparently new landing craft designs are not a secret.

I'm not absolutly sure of this bit seems to me I heard this before . I
believe it was in the works then and it was about 1980. Bolger and I
talked about it a little I believe, it's all a little vague in my mind..
I had worked part time a Owens yacht co. just outside of Baltimore as a
teenager. They had been building landing barges all during WWII. He
asked me some questions but I was unable to help because they were back
in production on pleasure boats when I worked there. Seems to me he
was just negotiating a design at that time so it is quite possible.
knowing how the government works that it was another five years before
he got started with an actual set of drawings. They may well have not
used his design at all. They are famous for picking everyones brains and
then giving the design contract to some favorite. If It's secret you
can't even take anyone to court. The court does not need to know.

I'm sure that was why I bookmarked the website,
someone posted the "it's coming soon here" tip on this list I think.
I couldn't find anything there, have tried a couple of times.

That's not what they told me. In fact, they mentioned some details of
its capabilities when I spoke to them about it a couple of years ago.
And niether of them have security clearances, according to Phil. Given
that a classification of top secret means that compromising the
information could lead to "exceptionally grave damage to the United
States," I doubt that the project is top secret, or even secret,
although some specific design details or performance characteristics
might be. Otherwise, even the mention of it in MAIB might have been a
violation.

There is supposedly an unclassified technical paper on this design that
was to have appeared in one of the military journals. PB&F had
promised to send me a copy, but that never happened and I'm not sure if
it was ever published.

Sorry to take issue with this, but the last time I checked a map,
Afghanistan was a land-locked, mountainous country, where I'd consider
it highly unlikely that landing craft might be of any use.

I spoke with PCB last summer and he said the project, which occupied he and Suzanne for 3 years, was top secret. I guess that's why you haven't heard much.

Is there anything public about Bolger's landing craft proposal yet?

Other than some casual mention of the project in MAIB I haven't found

anything.
