Re: [bolger] Re: Router and shaper bits at Grizlly

if you back the cove bit a hair back so that the lip is not as sharp breakages isn't a problem.

Even though it will be glassed, I do my canoes and tenders clear so that the wood shows.

Hi, Group!

You might want to try a little bigger diameter cut
(not shank) for your 1/4" stock, like, say, 3/8" or
so. The reason is that, especially where the strips
meet at the turn of the bilge, one edge of the female
member (the cove) will break or keep the "bead" or
male member from seating fully into the previous
strip.

I always use a bead-and-cove set that is a little
bigger than the thickness of the planking I am using.
This saves a little on planking stock since the cove I
cut is not quite as deep. Besides, on small boats the
hull will be filled and 'glassed anyway, right?

Don't get me wrong; the 1/4" cutters will work. I
just want you to know there is some latitude in the
process.

My fault a little here

They sell sell cove and flute sets up to 1/2" drive but the ones for
boat use specifically are 1/4 in drive.

So lets go there

Why would you want a bigger drive set then the 1/4 in drive, it is aimed
at the thin planking that it used for strippers. Why would you be using
any thicker planking? Lots of seam. expansion issues there. My
understanding is normal strip planking is about 1/4 in thick, smaller
bits would work well unless you have a shaper that has a 1/2 drive then
you need the bigger drive bit.
