Re: Gloves for Acetone

( There may be two of these messages. )

David,

I think it might be your epoxy, not the acetone, that's
eating up your gloves. I've just had a latex glove soaking
in neat acetone for about 10 minutes, no ill effect.

I'm allergic to latex, so I've tried everything else. For
most stuff the powdered vinyl one's work great. There is
also a type, under various names that hospitals use
increasingly now, a thick blue or purple synthetic hide with
no powder. Both are more destroyed by acetone than latex is.

I once had a job where I used a box of gloves per shift, so
I got used to pulling them off in favor of a new pair
whenever they get even a little bit messy.

If you're cleaning up epoxy, you can switch to vinegar or
denatured alcohol. The latex and vinyls hold up well with
either. I don't know what's actually 'denatured' about
the alcohol, but Prudence says, "Don't drink it."

Gloves are best purchased by the box. They're also great for working
on your car.

Yes. Lab Safety Supply
http://www.labsafety.com/commerce/default.asp?
has these plastic disposable gloves which come in a dispenser that
looks like a hand. You can wear them under your latex gloves and they
seem to keep the acetone out. I don't know if they're polyethylene or
what. Very cheap. Also good insurance for when you put a hole in the
latex gloves. They're not really sturdy enough or snug enough when
worn by themselves, however. I don't remember the name, but you ought
to be able to find them.

Ack! The acetone ate right through my latex gloves in about 5 seconds!

Anyone know what glove material is acetone proof?
