Re: [bolger] Re: MICRO plans

You might want to double check the accuracy of this as most camera
lenses produce barrel or pincushion effects. That is, straight lines
are not really straight all the time. The are best in the center and
worst near the edges and can vary considerably as you zoom in or out.
It might not appear too great, but It would be troublesome if the panels
did not meet by something as small as 1/4".

That is a neat idea, and maybe worth a try on some other designs. I
am thinking that if you were doing one of the plans out of Payson's
books it might work well.

I found that Micro was simple enough with plans and scale rule in
hand. Birdwatcher (I hope to get to this someday) is done in metric
measurements as well, this should make this project even easier as
most errors in my building comes from misinterpreting the conversions
with feet - eigths - and sixteenths as the math is tougher.

I read an article on laying out lines that suggested taking slide
photos of plans and then projecting the image onto a flat wall to take
dimensions and lines for frames directly from the image to paper or ply.
I tried it using a simple SLR camera mounted on a simple stand that
holds the camera exactly flat to the plan and then mounted the slide
projector so it was exactly flat to the wall and moved it in and out
til the image was the correct size. If nothing else one can see the
project in full size and perhaps wrap ones head around it better. I did
this with several canoes but it is supposed to work with much larger
boats. This was over 25 years ago and perhaps our digital age has made
these cameras and slide projectors inexpensive.

I find measuring on the lines works best. Also, look at all the
sheets that cover the piece you are working on, making sure all the
dimensions come out right.

Got the plans blown up to 100%, got a "Metric Readings from Foot and
Inch Drawings" architects scale (cant find an imperial scale in
Australia) and it measures out nearly perfect, just have to work out
if I measure between the lines, on the lines or just outside the
lines.

Yes, if you don't then you won't be able to use an architectural rule to
make measurements and Bolger plans really require this.

When the plans open in pdf format, do I need to print them off to 100%
scale so as to get an accurate measurement with the architects scale?

PB&F's plans aren't in PDF format. They're only on paper - and a scale
rule will work fine. They're up to date, and anyway they don't cost a
whole lot more last time anyone checked. Watch out for CSD "plans"!!
