Re: [bolger] teal and windsprint (the fnal word)

On the strength of the trunk for Windsprint -- I just used 3/4" lumber
(pine or spruce -- I'd have to go out and look closely to see which) as
suggested in the plans for the ends of the trunk. When my teen-aged
nephew sailed with me he was quite energetic about bounding from one
side of the boat to the other when tacking, and he sat on the trunk when
that was the high side. By the end of the day one end of the trunk was
split away from the side of the boat. I repaired with fiberglass tape
all along the joint between the trunk and hull and with tape along the
top of the trunk. No more problems.

I haven't seen this post now for 3 days, so I'm assuming I did
something wrong when I posted it the first time like maybe hitting the
wrong button or something like that. Quotes are PCB.

For those who are interested in the conclusion to the first past of
this thread I received the official word from PCB.

"I would prefer the windsprint to the teal and not modify either
except to add more foam buoyancy"

So no tombstone transom. He suggested the surf if I wanted a
tombstone transom. Of course, the whole idea of the transom was to
widen the boat out a bit for stability, not just because I wanted a
tombstone. I Sometimes don't write these questions out in the detail
I should and think everyone can read my mind as well as I can. The
featherwind is looking somewhat attractive now too.

"neither boat is well suited to a swing leeboard"

I wasn't even thinking of this, but it's good to know.

"Just make the trunk good and strong in the windsprint and have a
spare leeboard for the teal"

So, a good strong trunk it is.

Also asked about his suggestion regarding the seaworthiness of Romp,
Black Gauntlet II, Sweet Chariot, Manatee, or Triad as possible open
water craft (North Atlantic coast, not the protected waters of Mass
Bay, i.e. sailing from Mass to Caribbean for the winter).

No answer, will have to reword it and ask it again.

Great guy though, very quick response and more detailed than I expected.
