Re: [bolger] Re: Phil Bolger's Plywood 12 1/2 sea trials

Had to go to Google for the Morrisey Shinn, not very often that I see a
totally unknown A/C. Good luck, those are huge time sinks.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to send away to PB&F to get an updated
set of drawings.

About 3 years restoring a 1961 Morrisey-Shinn Model 2150A (only about
40 of them built in the early '60's), then spent a bunch of time this
last year recovering the bottom wings on an Acrosport II biplane and
fixing miscellaneous engine issues. Currently building a Christen
Eagle biplane which should tie up most of my project time for the next
couple of years. Then we'll be back into building boats.

A couple years back, PB&F updated the Plywood 12 1/2 design. If my
memory serves me, the major part of the change was adding about six
inches to the sheer strake (or combing?) to increase the freeboard.
Gotta ask, what airplane?

Outstanding photos and great to see someone get a full size Plywood 12-1/2 onto the
water! It looks like you did a spectacular job on the construction and the details such as
the castings.

I've got to dig up my drawings, but the keel design seems to have changed considerably
from what I remember (both the ballast attachment design and the ballast weight). Is that
an update on the latest drawings from Bolger or your own modification? Either way, I think
it's a great improvement as that was the only area of the design that concerned me.

The drawings I have also show a Solent lug rig as an alternative to the rig you have. I still
haven't decided which I will go with. Unfortunately I'm still a few years away from building
one as it will probably wait until we move to eastern Canada, but your pictures sure do
whet the appetite again.

Since I built the model (I can't believe it's been almost 7 years!), I moved from Indonesia
back to Canada, and have been sidetracked with a few other projects (restoring an old
military jeep, an airplane and am now in the middle of building another plane), but the
Plywood 12-1/2 has always stayed in the back of my mind and on the master project list.
But the problem with living where there's not a lot of water is that it's a bit more difficult
to get engaged in building a sailboat you'll only use a couple weeks a year! I still think it'll
be a great boat to keep at our cabin on the Gatineau River near Ottawa eventually, but for
now the plastic boat out there will have to suffice during the summers.

Again, great job and thanks for sharing the pictures - I'm definitely jealous!

That is a neat bridge too.. elegant, extremely user friendly, probably
relatively cheap ( compare to the Brisbane pedestrian "Goodwill" bridge
for instance), rethought and simplified in a Bolger kind'a way -
compare to the coathanger in the background (and it's extremely long,
user unfriendly on-ramps from far beyond the main thoroughfares along
the river banks).

I don't remember. I am sure that concrete ballast could work, but the
complexity of building a curvy keel box would take time $$$. The fin
keel with a lead casting is such an elegant solution, like with Micro.
I think the 'electric spartina' is comparable, where PCB designed a
box keel, ballasted with lead acid batteries powering an electric
motor.

Your concrete ballast solution wouldn't change anything would it? Just
less free flooding area and a small probably unmeasurable increase in
pitching moment? Seems like a really good idea in the current lead market.

For those of you having problems with photos
of the Bolger Plywood 12-1/2, try this URL:

PS -- Not a Bolger design, but an interesting boat,
nevertheless:

I agree with David G. -- those are great photos. Thanks, Gerard!

For future reference, if one wraps a URL inside those chevron
thingies, the URL is supposed to stay unbroken. For example, this one
would be:

She's a beauty. I've long wondered how she would sail, and I'm very
glad to hear your glowing report. A very neat job indeed!

There is a 'wrapping problem' with the URL. Use cut and paste to get
the whole long url, on my PC the "20trials/" is chopped off the end of
the URL and needed to be pasted back on...

Hi Everone, just wanted to give an update to everone on outcome of sea
trials for the Plywood 12 1/2. Sails great, needs 15-18 knots of wind
to get rail down. Very stiff and comfortable to sail, feels like a
boat twice her size. I'am very pleased with her sailing ability. I have
been out in 30+ knots of wind with only one reef in main and had no
problems sailing or handling the boat solo. Take a look at the link
