Re: Micro in 3D just finished

I just stuck the sketchup file in the 3D warehouse. Just search for
Bolger and mine comes up.

Hi Scott

Sorry, missed this post until today, and actually the Micro that I
have (Matilda Jean) has some pictures in the Files section of Bolger7
in a file called Australian Micros. There are a few pictures of John
Mann's Micro, a couple of Paloma Blanca and a few of our boat.

The Micro II adaptation consists of three sheets which are available
from Phil Bolger & Friends, and includes the Micro II Navigator
details, I don't know anything about a pdf file, though? The Micro II
/ Navigator plans are in addition to the original Micro plans and are
somewhat sketchy, really, because they assume that the builder has
already built a Micro and so will have a lot more
confidence/experience, etc. than otherwise.

essentially, the changes to the cuddy cabin Micro consist of the new
Chinese Gaff rig (both main & mizzen), an addition of a couple of
padded out areas on the bottom panels near the bow which were added to
reduce pounding at anchor, so there is also a corresponding addition
to the keel in the forward section running up to the bow transom.

They've put the mainmast in a tabernacle attached to the bow transom
so that the mast on Micro II is 1 ft further forward than on Micro I
and this is also shaped a little to give a more rounded bow appearance
(well, sort of, with the forward section of the round mast)

The mast on Micro II is meant to be a hollow section round aluminium
tube of 18ft, so is much lighter than the original in any case, but
as it's in a tabernacle, that shouldn't be an issue.

By the way, my boat has not yet been converted to Micro II
configuration, I would love to do that one day but am at present
building a Michalak Scram Pram with a much smaller rig, so the Micro
conversion will have to wait for now. Consequently, too, I don't get
to use the Micro much!

Scott,
The Long Micro is basically a scaled-up micro with some slight
differences. Mast in tabernacle. The berths in the cuddy cabin
(which are 6'6" long) do not extend under the bridge-deck (so you
could sleep side-by-side, if you filled the valley between the
berths). The SA/D is greater than micro, and some some of the other
performance metrics are (IMHO) improved, methinks in response to some
complaints that the micro did not perform energetically in light airs.
For LM, hull speed is greater, motion comfort is improved, and capsize
ratio is better than micro. Ultimately the design must sing to your
heart- the differences between the two designs are slight, and
LM uses more materials, thicker ply, and takes considerably longer to
build. I love my LM and building it was one of the most fun projects
I have undertaken. Sailing it is a blast as well. I daydream about
my LM everyday.

You have probably already seen my photos here:

Are there any other major design changes, or is it just a scaled up version?

Greg, is you're boat in the photos section? If so I probably have a copy already. If not, mind
sending me some? I am collecting as many photos as I can off here and Bolger 2 before I
make up my mind on which boat to build.

Not sure how well this will go over, but if anyone is interested in a pdf. trade for the micro 2,
I might be convinced. email me atscottychop@.... At this point I am only doing
computer models of them and will purchase the full plans directly from Bolger before the real
build takes place.

Hi Scott

Great 3D images of Micro, thanks for posting them. I'm wondering
what you think of Micro II. To me, the revision seems more
attractive if starting from scratch. I have a Micro and wouldn't
mind converting it to Micro II specs, one day. - In the meantime I
have to finish another boat though before I much around with the
Micro, though!

It's interesting that Micro II gets virtually no coverage on this
group. I guess because it is associated with the Navigator version,
most of the time??? although there's a photo of one Micro with the
Chinese Gaff main in the photos section somewhere with a Canadian
ensign, so there's at least one cuddy version with that rig. But the
Micro II version goes that much further with the mainmast in a
tabernacle. Much easier to put up and take down!

Scott,
Nice job on the CAD renders. Thanks for sharing. If you haven't seen
Bruce's isometric of the Micro on Flickr, check it out. You have
chosen one of my favorite Bolger designs. Keep us posted when you
start building (what are you waiting for?).

Hello all,

I am a huge admirer of the micro and someday wish to build one. I just recently purchased
the plans and got to work on a paper model, wood model, and now finally a CAD model in
google sketchup.

Cheers,
Scott
