I'm lookoing at it. If you cut out the deck area just between the
hinge bracket and the gunwale, you might be able to build a creditable
bilge board trunk.

Can anyone help Me?
Call me conservative, but I'd go the Bolger way. The guy knows what's what.

Hi everyone,

I have a FS that is not built according to plan in regards to the
boards. T he builder, thought that leeboards would be better than the
bilgeboards as per Bolger. Alas he never finished building his
leeboard modification, and now the boat is mine.

So, what to do? Keep in mind that the boat is completely built.

Option #1: Finish the modifications. The boards have been built,
slightly different than bolgers (This makes me nervous from all I heard
about how touchy the balance of a boat can be) but the design of how to
attach the boards to the boat and make them work is not on paper and
the verbal explanations/ideas of the builder, now some months back,
leaves me wishing either he had finished it or built according to plans.

Option #2: I thought that this idea might work if I get your blessings
on it. I noticed that the Light Schonner has only one board, and its
off center to boot. Shouldn't this work for the FS as well. No doubt
much more difficult now, sense I need to retrofit it and not build it
in according to sequence. What do you think?

Option #3: Bolger himself suggested in a fax that I should do away
with the leeboards as he dosen't feel that this design will work well
with them (?) and to make brackets/slots on the gunwale and chine log
to accept the boards as orginally designed. In other words, on the
outside of the boat, right where they should have been put on the
inside of the boat. It would work, but I don't think it would look
great, and I have the problem of the aluminium strip on the chine log
(used for the attachment hook - keeping the hulls together while
sailing) being in the way. The bracket would have to be made to fit
atop this strip, yet another complication.

Option #4: Rip off the top of the deck where the orginal design calls
for them, retro fit the cases as per original design and rebuild deck.
The most work required of all options, but the only pretty option if
you guys don't think the one board aka Light Schooner option will work.

I sure do appreciate all the help, I don't know where I would be
without the scads of info I've gleaned from this site.

I of course, am open to other ideas should you think of one

Thanks,
Chuck C.
