Re: mast for Elegant Punt, Teal, ...

For anyone looking to save time and money getting a mast for an EP or
Teal, I have a mast blank, glued up and sawn roughly to shape. It was
for my Elegant Punt but it was never finished to the sailing stage. I
also have, if I can find them, the leeboard blade, rudder blade and
tiller. The tiller even got varnished.

All these things have been aged in my garage for about 20 years and
are available for pickup (in Stamford, CT) on a first come, first
served basis in return for a small charitable contribution (for free
if you can make a good case for yourself as in need of charity).

You can have the punt too, if you want it. It's complete and ready to
row, but badly checked from being out in the weather for 15 years.

Ahoy, Landlubber,
So glad to hear of another gypsy underway. Just at the finishing (and
finishing and finishing...) stages on mine. I concur with the wooden mast
idea. I suspect that the deminsions for Gypsy's mast are an upgrade from
those for the same rig on other boats (Surf, Elegant Punt, June Bug, etc).
Having gone through three masts in two years with June Bug, I think the
beefier 2&1/2" mast for Gypsy should have a longer life. While I was at it I
built a heavier mast for June Bug (2" instead of 1&3/4"). Using HHP's
doubled 2x4 for blanks for both of them. Crappy air dried NS white spruce,
but they look amazingly good when finished.

I'm toying with idea of filling the fore and after areas with foam and
decking them over. But I'll launch and try her as per plans before I do
anything drastic... not so much because I'm a purest, but because this has
gone on long enough! All the best with your rigging issues.

jeb, on the shores of Fundy, having learned never to start a small boat
building project this late in the season again.
