I had the pleasure of commissioning and sailing Blueberry from Connecticut to Maine last May by way of many an east coast port. Great fun.
I purchased her sight unseen because after much correspondence with the owner and many a probing question I felt secure that she had been maintained and protected since her build. When I arrived she was in better condition than I imagined. A turn key operation and we were sailing out on the Atlantic headed north in spite of lots of wind and inclement weather.
Spent a quiet night adrift over the Stellwegen Bank waiting for whales. A marvelous dawn at sea and another windy day. She now sits under the watchful eye of friend Charlie awaiting my May arrival in the US. North again.
Blueberry is a fine collaboration between Phil Bolger and David Hume who conceived of her and built her. I happened to be the right person when she was put up for sale (I felt like I was being interviewed for a job, this boat is loved by many). I had known of BB for years but had never seen her. Up the coast to Maine she was a topic where ever we stopped, several people had read the book about her.
She is a fine sturdy boat that handled some cold windy spring sailing as we set forth to Maine. Spring 2008 was cold and blustery with lots of rain. Poor jet lagged me flew in from the topical western Pacific, thin blood and all. At anchor with a flower pot on the stove for heat she was as toasty below as I desired. I spent five weeks cruising her and most of it was cold. Below decks she is a well conceived pocket yacht. Lots of room to move around, an ample library and wine rack made for delightful evenings on the hook as the wind howled outside.
This May a new blue asymmetrical spinnaker, four new bronze ports and a dodger cockpit awning set up will have her ready for going further north.
