Painting again

I am about ready to paint a wooden hull that I just built.
Can anyone suggest just how to approach it? That is, should I use a sealer
first, or just a good wood primer? I have a gallon of exterior polyurethane
enamel that I would like to use for the finish coat.
suggestions?
