Seagull engine and other cheap alternatives

My Seagull too has a wrap around rope starter!! I am 27 and lets just say the
engine is older then me!! I specifically sought out a Seagull because parts are
still pretty easy to get hold of, they are durable and reliable (Bradford Raby's
story is a good example of that reliability, toughness), plus I can fix it
myself.
When I see recommendations to buy new outboards for our Bolger sailing boats , I
must admit, I really don't see the point of building a boat out of plywood and
glue with salvaged bits of equipment, homemade sails and sits on a trailer made
out of a reclaimed "caravan" (a small towable mobile home, I don't know the USA
term) and then spending the same amount of money again on a brand new outboard.
OK fine if it is a motorboat like the Sneakeasy or Micro Tug, but a Micro is
supposed to be sailed!!!
So my vote is for the Lawnmower engines, Seagulls and whatever else does the job
cheap enough.
