Re: Plywood/fiberglass Sandwich
There is a book on this topics available on the net at the address
http://www.marinecomposites.com/.
Regarding amateur construction, the only designer that I know who
advocates the use of the FG/ply/FG sandwich is Jacques Mertens at
bateau.com, but I never heard of ply/FG/ply sandwiches. It sound like
a nightmare to build.
Jacques redesigned his Vagabond with the new scantlings, and the boat
is now mostly made with 6 mm plywood sandwiched in two layers of 9-oz
biaxial. Justin Pipkorn has built and now sails and races the boat
with amazing results. Jacques says that "Tensile and flexural
strength of the [6 mm sandwich] panels is much higher than the 9mm
plywood version with all the other advantages of a fiberglass hull".
Just for the record, the Vagabond is a 20 footer displacing more than
2000 pounds.
Best, Pippo

I was contemplating plywood planking while we drove into the city
last night and began to wonder if adding a layer of glass between
courses of plywood would do anything besides adding work, weight and
expense.
What prompted this is how much stiffer the Light Scooner Margaret
Ellen is now that she has her 6/3 oz fiberglass skin. Would the
effect by multiplied in a 1/4"-6oz-1/4"-6oz-1/4"-6oz layup, or merely
cumulative? Do plywood and glass/epoxy have some sort of
complimentary nature?
