Re: [bolger] Re: Beach Wheels

Yes, that's it. The lake was built by the WPA and others in 1940 for
recreation and hydro - the largest multi-arch Pensacola damn in the world -
over a mile long. 47,000 acres, up to 160 feet deep, and 1300 miles of
coastline - a pretty place...

Fritz,

Thanks for the links - ask and ye shall receive.

Nothing fancy; we have a garage on a long slope down to the lake (Grand
Lake o' the Cherokees) and it seems like a waste to spend $300-400 on a
Seitech dolly (nice, though) to get my Whitehall back and forth. Speaking
of, I just added some more bench seats for sailing -

(...and, I want something for this weekend!)

I think Happy and Idea Development are the same. I'll guess Seitech make
their own wheel and add a 4-wheeler tire to it. We have big, loose, river
rock and railroad ties to go over, so it needs to be cushy and light. At
50-80 bucks, those tires seem expensive to me - call me cheap! No salt
water, so maybe I'll go with wheelbarrow types.

I don't know if I'll make an A-frame, dolly, or a just gizmo to just go up
the centerboard slot.

Gregg,

I've been compiling a list of wheel sources and ideas with links:

http://www.alaska.net/~fritzf/Boats/Amphib/Amphib_boats.htm

Seitech and Happy's are the two places that come to mind where you
can
purchase plastic-hubbed pneumatic wheels ready-made (Seitech will
sell
their wheels separately from their dollies). I've got some of each.
Happy's name is embossed on their hubs, but I don't know who
manufactures the hubs from either source. If you find some other
sources, please let me know! The Seitech wheels have Delrin needle
bearings if you want that sort of thing - their engineering and
finish
work are at a much higher level than Happy's. Lately I've been
content to make home-made wheels out of plywood discs to go with my
home-made boats. In idle moments Harry James and I have wondered
whether we could wheel a Dakota or Wyoming up onto a beach. OK, I'm
curious what you're up to!

"103 Small Boat Rigs" is the current edition. I have not seen it, but
I believe that the additional three rigs include the gaff/junk rig.

It's available from www.instantboats.com ($28) and from
www.bateau.com ($25.95). Compare shipping costs, taxes, etc. The cost
worked out to about $0.05/hour of reading/dreaming enjoyment for me.

Neither website listed the publisher.

I believe you can buy it directly from the author as well, price
unknown to me.
