Re: [bolger] Acquiring and usibility of Bolger plans

I believe Bolger's excuse was he designed the Gloucester Gull not I
design small boats. Its in one of the books.

Bye, Jamie -- sorry to see you go. I'm hoping it will eventually occur
to everyone that talking about boats is more fun. Must say, though, I
wound up leaving the alt. boating groups for much the same reason --
most of the discussion became polemics against PWCs and specific brands
of motor boats.

BTW, even a light dory deserves a name!

Granted,

I, tend to post a little too fast, and then realize I have left off a detail like this or ignored an important aspect of the post to which I am replying.  I considered posting a clarification, but decided to not post because it seemed like simplicity was an important aspect and Payson doesn't have the box keel version.

ok i know this is a touchy subject for some reason but if Mrs. Bolger is't selling plans right now and there is no catalogue or web site showing his plans then how do we get plans from Phil Bolger and Friends? Next question is how can you find out what plans are available and what kind of boat they depict.

I myself would rather buy from Bolger than pay someone who isn't paying a mans widow royaltys. I plan to build a brick first as a tender for a Tennessee or Sneakeasy and just to get my hands dirty. I havent seen plans for either of the sharpies and i assume Mrs. Bolder is in possession of them. I am in no hurry for one of those plans so it isnt pressing right now but when i am ready to tackle the bigger boat i hope i can get those plans from boldger and friends so that the proceeds go to her and not someone bootlegging his plans.

NO NO NO . . . Common Sense boats, in their present incarnation, are pirating Phil Bolger designs - refusing to pay royalties, etc - and Phil Bolger and Friends have long asked that we not do business with them. And, I thought it was the consensus here to boycott them. All the Bolger designs "offered" by CSD can legitimately be had from Phil Bolger and Friends.

Instantboats. com, on the other hand, is indeed an excellent and legitimate source of plans for Mr. Bolger's designs.

Roger
I have ordered plans for brick. i like the sneakeasy and tennesse plans because i dont sail and they seemed fairly easy to build. all i have done is ask questions about how and what i need to know to build a boat. i have never been "bent out of shape" or experessed any anger. lets put this to rest and get back on topic.

Every time I've suggested to the group this is the same troll that got
all bent out of shape about his inability to get his Tennessee plans,
he's emailed me directly to inquire what I'm talking about.

This time is no different. I just got the email. It's the same guy.

You cannot tell the exact computer with a 4 place i address.
If they were entering the internet at the same entry point,
ALL of the numbers would be identical, not just the first two or three
groups.

What you are seeing is one of Yahoo's many hub addresses.

Sorry about the NO NO NO, Eric - that was a bit of an over reaction on my part! It wasn't really aiming at "setting you straight," in any case, just trying to get the word out to everyone.

Years ago - long before I knew better, but after Bernie Wolfard sold the business - I bought (non-Bolger)kayak plans from that same company. They sucked, and the kayak I built from them was such a laughably pathetic design that I gave it away a month later. I chalked that up as a learning experience, but have been vocal about _____ ever since.
Bernie was great, though.

The Sneakeasy is not the new one with the box keel or cutwater, or so I understand.  That one is obtained from PB&F...

Well... that's not quite _the_ BRICK. Not drawn for Dynamite either, I think. I wonder if it has a sailing rig? The 59 LOM? I've often wondered why Dynamite doesn't offer BRICK and, more so, _the_ STORM PETREL drawn for him.

Payson's paper catalogue and paper dory catalogue have more Bolger designs than are shown at the site plans page.

David,

Thank you for promptly setting me straight.
I will NOT make the mistake of promoting Common Sense Boats again!
Hopefully this post is the last time I even mention it.

I most certainly was not familiar with the present situation with Common Sense which I was more familiar with when it started and believe then believe had legitimately contracted with Bolger regarding plans. You need not clutter the list with an explanation of what happened since.

I have bought plans from Payson at Instant Boats and been very satisfied with correspondence and plans.

Bruce,

Much to my regret, when Sonny said he'd sent money for Tennessee
plans to Suzanne but was eager to get going I sent him a scan of the
SBJ article that includes the drawings in order to get started. Then,
the weirdness began.

Dick does not sound like he's got those plans.

Coincidence, unlucky timing, and similarity of topic put several posters in a situation where there was some doubt if they were ligit or were trying to continue posting under new names after some rather not very nice posts.  Not very nice at all.  Give Bruce 4 or 5 more chances, you won't regret it!

Fellows . . . new and old . . .

We are all a little "touchy" right now -- especially those of us who
have been on this group for a long time -- because of Phil's recent
and sudden passing. We all have marveled at and appreciated Susanne's
open communication with this group, at a time when she must have
trouble just getting through the day sometimes.

Many of us are feeling a little "protective" of Susanne right now,
and when a few (or the same one several times) posters came on here
with an attitude like they have some kind of right to tell Susanne how
to run her business -- especially at such a difficult time -- that
protective attitude kicks into overdrive.

I suggest we all go back to our corners, assume this latest poster is
legit (and he has access to the Brick plans through instantboats.com,
so he can go right ahead and get started), and let's all sit back and
wait for Susanne to tell us what her next move will be.

Not trying to be a forum cop -- just my opinion.

Those IP addresses all belong to Yahoo... and since they're all Yahoo email addresses, I would say the odds of that happening innocently are pretty good.

Not necessarily sock puppetry at all.

They're all Yahoo IP addresses, so it only means they all may have posted the

Arrggghhh. Forgot to clip the extra on this last post. Pet peeve of mine that most of us don't do that.

Also want to add that I've got a set of Hawkeye plans bought from Bolger about 4 years ago. I find them, along with the key, very thorough and clear. It is apparent to me I can cut out a 'kit' of plywood parts and then assemble a Hawkeye from that kit.

Don Schultz
It is "touchy" because 'Common Sense' is a thief.
Also the versions they are selling are not up to date. IE, Martha Jane was significantly changed for seaworthiness. I would only consider building the latest Bolger version

Instantboats.com does have a limited catalog. Although not well organized, you can use the advanced search on this group to glean info about Bolger designs that will suit you.

Bruce Hallman has nice 3D renderings of several Bolger designs up on Flicker. No specs.

For all of Bolger's genius, he had NO sense of marketing. That's not quite right. He was eccentric and wished to market in his own consultative manner. He depended on 'word of mouth', meaning us here on this group, and others to promote his work. He wished to be approached as a kind of guru. YOu make your desires known to him, and then pronounces what he deemed best. He wasn't fond of just selling a set of Tennesee, or Fast Motor Sailer, or Micro plans unless he understood those designs really fit your needs and wants.

Well, that won't work anymore. Suzanne may want to follow portions of Bolger's model but has also made it clear she wishes to move into a more conventional model.

This is a period of waiting for the widow to get her program together. I think PB&F will, over the next several months, bring the more popular Bolger designs to market better than ever before. She may also promote some of the lesser known designs.

If you NEED to start a project this month a Bolger design not on Instant Boats isn't going to work for you. If you can wait a bit, you can get what you want later.

The simple answer is . . . you don't. We may not like the way PB&F do
business, but it was always their choice to run their business as they
see fit -- and now that choice is Susanne's. If people don't like the
"quirky" way PB&F does business, there are lots of boat plans out
their from lots of other designers.

Susanne has told us that soon she will have a more organized presence
on the Net. How that plays out is her choice. We are ll always welcome
to go elewhere. Until then, you can get a copy of "Boats With an Open
Mind," and look around the INternet for information on Bolger designs.

You can buy plans for both Brick and Sneakeasy from Dynamite Payson (www.instantboats.com
). He is the only authorized seller of the Bolger plans he carries.
He has plans for many Bolger designs.

Until Susanne decides to do business in some other manner, if you want
Bolger designs, you have to deal with her on her terms -- ie. mail/
fax . . . wait for reply. No one is forcing any of us to build Bolger
boats, and we don't have any "right" to build them. The plans belong
to Susanne, and she can sell them (or not) as she likes.

DC
Robert,

Brick and Sneakeasy are both available fromPayson.  They are very prompt.  I got Windsprint plans within a week via USPS.

ok i know this is a touchy subject for some reason but if Mrs.

Instantboats.com, on the other hand, is indeed an excellent and legitimate source of plans for Mr. Bolger's designs.

Instant boats is supported by Bolger(PB&F), Common-Sense is not.  Search and read over past messages.  Apparently there are issues with payment of royalties and quality of copies.  Also you will not get plans with updates that have been made over, I'd say 15 years.  And, you can't call the design firm to get answers on problems you may have.

Will get you plans to very good Bolger boat plans; all of which do what they claim to do, and all of which someone with enough skill to mix a cake mix of epoxi thickener and swing a hammer without breaking the other thumb too many times can build.

Phil Bolger once wrote (I forget where) that when he got to the pearly gates and St. Peter asked, "What is your excuse?" he would reply, "I design small boats."  and St. Peter would have to let him in.

When I get there, and St. Peter asks what is my excuse, and I reply, "I built a small boat," he will reply, "You are already in."

If you really want to build a boat look at the boat plans, pick one that you like and think you can build, buy the plans and start building it. DO NOT PICK THE BOAT YOU THINK YOU CAN BUILD UNLESS IT IS A BOAT YOU REALLY ***l*i*k*e** *. All the plans from these two sources are very buildable and require a similar level of skill to build regardless of appearance. If you are dreaming of a larger cruising boat, pick a boat plan that will make a great dinghy for that dream cruiser.

Bolger designed two boats that row/sail/power equally well. One looks really weird unless you take it to Bangkok and then it will look right at home (Thomaston Galley if I remember correctly. Choosing one of these boats means you won't have to choose what sort of boating you want to do. You will be able to do it all, well, and get to experiment in any ways you choose with rigs, oar design etc. if you don't want to follow Bolgers recommendations.

Building time? A few weeks a few hundred dollars.

An AS29 I'll estimate at 2000 hours and $12,000 to $15,000. (Anyone got an accurate accounting of their building time for their AS29?) I expect the source of AS29 plans is Bolger Assoc. If these or other large or complicated boat plans are what you are impatiently waiting for, stop pacing around and build a boat from the above sources. The time and experience will more than pay for themselves in saving and quality of workmanship on the larger boat.

As for metric vs Standard: I hate metric. It has no relationship to the universe. The French got it wrong right along with their other brilliant idea of the same time period the 32 hour day. Somehow metric measurement didn't go the way of the 32 hour day and people keep trying to foist it on folks who want their world to have more connection with the universe. The inch is very close to the pyramid inch which relates to the cubit all of which have an amazingly close relationship with cosmic measurements which we can accurately measure today and to which metric has no close relationship.

I find building to feet-inches- eights to be very quick and satisfying. Once used to it, I never made any mistakes I wouldn't have made with a metric rule. When I started building my cruising boat after building a couple of "instant" skiffs from Harold Payson, I had no one to ask what 6-11-5 meant and was building my boat before I was really confident the 5 was 5/8". The 6 was obviously feet and the 11 probably was inches, in which case the 5 had to be eights because if it was sixteenths somewhere in this table of offsets there would be an number over 7.

Now you know more than I knew when I started building boats.

Lastly, don't believe anyone about how much time and money it will cost you to build a boat. You can do this and that to save money and do it for half as much. A third as much! If you believe us you will realise building a boat will not get you on the water as cheaply or nearly as quickly as buying a used boat, and you will never have the satisfaction of saying, "Yes, I built my boat".
