Re: [bolger] Re: Duckworks plans sales
Yahoo small business provide web services for only $ 11.00 per month and the software ( Yahoo SiteBuilder) is free and extremly user fiendly and simple to set up without any web designer experience. Plus for a few $ more there are also sites with your own store ready to set up. I build my web site in a couple of hourswww.elcraftonline.com. I think having Duckworks sell the plans sounds like a good idea, it would plans more accessible to more people and would remove a lot of the 'paperwork' type issues, all the initial inquiries and money collection etc., associated with a buyer selecting and purchasing plans. Duckworks are already setup to do all that. Then the task of packaging and posting for Susanne and co. would be reduced to simply putting the plans in the package and mailing them.
I also think that PB&F should have their own web presence too. If Duckworks are handling inquiries, orders and money etc., the task of setting up a PB&F web site would be much reduced, and the maintenance would be even less. Then the site could concentrate on what it should be there for - showcasing their designs.
I have only one concern to raise though. I'm am planning on ordering direct from PB&F, I read (somewhere on the web) that they only answer queries from clients who purchased from them (which makes sense) but I would want to know that if I purchased through Duckworks I would still have access to PB&F for queries that Chuck & co could not answer (if there is such a thing! :o)
Finally, building a web site is not rocket science, it's a bit like building a boat, real easy to build something that works but the top notch stuff takes time, effort and expertise. I'm am sure that there is a sufficient overlap between the boat building community and the IT community that we could find people to build, or at least prototype a web site for Susanne. As a software engineer (but not a web developer) I would gladly donate my time to such a task, there must be others who would like to see this get off the ground.

I can say ditto for my dealings with Dynamite Payson, he presently
runs a honest and good PB&F plans selling business.
The business of selling plans also includes answering the asked
questions from prospective builders. And, often I suspect, answering
the unasked questions as builders coming to terms with just what they
want and/or need.

Duckworks already pays the overhead and legwork involved in a website as well as having credit card and paypal set-ups already in place.
Of course Susanne has the original transparencies for the blue prints and also the numbered construction instructions - again - something Mr. Bolger's genius gifted us with. So she would be the sole holder of these materials.
Fulfilling these orders might take perhaps a day a week to keep on top of, depending of course on the number of orders. For the most popular designs some could even be run off ahead of time and loaded into the famous "blue mailing tubes". Then it is just a case of addressing them and a trip to the post office or a call to a courier.
No need to set up credit card or paypal accounts and only one check to cash once a month.
Jim Michalak provides a pretty good template about providing basic info on each of his designs, as does Mr. Payson. They both offer small catalogues as well for a very minimal fee. Plus links to builds and actual building articles could be posted at Duckworks. Susanne could still be engaged with direct contact with snail mails, phone calls or fax.
An example of note is Paul Fisher. He has his own extensive website as well as his own discussion group on Yahoo, but is also listed in Duckworks, as is John Welsford and many other of the designers who also have an active blog site.

Last year I built a Jim Michalak Ladybug. I bought the plans, epoxy, fiberglass, fittings, sail, line and some tools from Duckworks.
Chuck answered dozens of my questions by email. I am certain that I would not have completed the boat without his help.
All my orders have been handled promptly and he and Sandra go out of their way to make sure you are happy with their service and products.
Cheers,
Murray
Chuck and Sandra may be amateur boat builders but when it comes to
business practices they are really professional and "in it for the long
haul" in my view. They have focused on a small niche market, which I
have followed since their inception and watched it grow and expand
steadily.
They actively seek out the best suppliers of quality products for the
best "bang for the buck" out there. Their daughter is also involved in
the business for when they are away and if there is going to be any
delays in filling orders they post to their magazine updates as to what
reason and for how long the delays might be. An example is their sail
business that may be backed up in filling orders at times.
I see it as an opportunity for to have online information on the more
popular small boat Bolger designs that have already been refined and
more or less finalized. This would free Susanne to focus more on the
designs that are still under development or outside this niche market.
I know how PCB&F have been stung badly by unscrupulous or naive business
practices in the past. I think this is a very viable alternative that
would be beneficial for everyone interested in these designs. The bottom
line for me is "integrity" and these people meet that in spades.
When it comes to CNC cutting services, our esteemed moderator meets that
criteria as well! But then he may be "out" enjoying life on the water
too much to become involved:-)

Boats is now cutting in Maine and offer both stitch-and-glue and
lapstrake ply kits.
I have not done any business with Jordan Boats, other than to talk to them about the availability of a particular boat in Maine, but they seemed on the phone most helpful. I haven't ordered a kit yet, so I can't comment on the quaility of their kits. I also don't have any idea what terms they offer designers for the right to cut a boat.
It is a mystery to me why more designers don't use kit builders as a marketing source. There must also be other independent kit providers like Jordan Boats that would make the plans and kits available.

They organize and regularly attend messabouts and raids, have built some Bolger designs and have commissioned at least one from Jim Michalak and built the prototype for several others. They take very little profit from selling plans and I suspect make most of their living selling a great line of supplies and hardware to build them.
They also have a close working relationship with Garth Battista, who is a book publisher atBreakaway Books, a small boat nut of the highest order and who deserves our support as well.
Chuck moderates a great discussion group and offers a lot of good advice when it comes to building small plywood boats. In fact I find it hard to understand where they get the time to do everything they do, including a recent trip to New Zealand to visit with John Welsford. Yet to my knowledge, no query - no matter how small or mundane - goes unanswered,
Even if the designs that being sold illegally, where offered through DW it would be a win/win situation for everyone in my view, and freeze out the rogue seller. Those being Old Shoe, Micro, Long Micro, Micro Trawler, Tennessee, Pirogue and Martha Jane - plans that are not offered through Dynamite Payson and of which Chuck is very familiar with. This would offer the opportunity to test the waters so to speak with really no risk.
I belong to several small boat groups and most members frequent Duckworks, and many are asking over and over again - "Where can I get Bolger Plans?" Many have written articles about their builds and sadly some are ordering plans from CS, then posting about how awful they are.

So in contrast with some companies PB+F have worked with over the years as I have heard, there can be no question (not that I could imagine there could be with the Leinwebers) about how many plans or which plans have been sold.

I would also highly recommend Duckworks as a venue. I've been working with Chuck & Sandra for about five years now, and they are top-notch folks - honest, competent, patient, knowledgeable, and strongly committed to promoting small boating. As a "recommended builder" for three of their designers (Storer, Welsford & now Bowdidge), I've had many occasions to interact with them. All of these interactions have been positive. They've visited my shop, and last summer Chuck spent some time with us for the Toledo Wooden Boat Show and the Columbia 150. It has reached the point now where I regard them as personal friends. We seek each others advice about the "interesting" aspects of being in the boating industry, and I can't overstate how savvy, creative, and level-headed they are.
I suspect they'd be happy to talk to you about promoting PB&F designs, and making them more easily available to a wider audience.
G'luck,

I have also worked with Chuck and Sandy Leinweber on occasion and bought stuff from them and they are indeed a very classy act.
They really have become the go-to site for a lot of the kind of folks who might build from PB+F plans.
The other big thing is that at least with Jim Michalak, I can say that they take the order and the payment, and then notify JM, and he puts the plans in the mail and I would guess they settle up monthly or whatever. So in contrast with some companies PB+F have worked with over the years as I have heard, there can be no question (not that I could imagine there could be with the Leinwebers) about how many plans or which plans have been sold.
Cheers and best wishes
Brian
