Re: [bolger] River Skiff Launch

Jon:

On tracking without a skeg in flat water (or, worse, with a cross-wind
in flat water): Some kayaks have a retractable skeg. You could do a
similar thing with your river skiff. Up for moving water, down for rowing.

The design was influenced by the Colorado River dories and Rogue River drift boats, but is much less extreme in beam, flare, and rocker. It's intended for the same use as Michalak's Ozarkian, but is deeper of hull, has a sharp bow, and should be able to stay dry in a little rougher water. This boat can be paddled, rowed, sculled, poled, or motored, and carries a huge load of camping gear and crew. We didn't get to a river with it yet, but it worked great on a big lake.

Taking advantage of the "...and similar" rule of the group.

This year I completed and launched a boat of my own design, intended for flatwater river float trips. I call it a river skiff, and it's 21' x 4'4". The whole website has been reorganized, but the navigation is still somewhat primitive. More updates, included more photos of the boats on the water are hopefully coming soon.
