Re: micro reefing (was long micro)

Goodboat,

Yes, I use the jiffy line for the outhaul as well.

Myles, I think I like your reefing system. My sail has two rows of reef-points (I've yet to double-reef) and I use those. I don't shoot the boom forward, but tie the new clew grommet both down to the boom and aft to the original clew. Don't you need some such outhaul on your arrangement too? Or do you do that with the jiffy-reefing line, taking a turn around the boom first?

Sailed the Micro twenty miles yesterday, put it in storage today. I hate to do that. ---Mason

I agree that the recommended reefing procedure is a pain. Plus, you end up with a boom that is banging against the mast after fastening the rear of the boom to the rear reef grommet and sticking several feet of boom ahead of the mast.

I have followed my own variation. I ran a light line that loops under the sail and through the reef grommets. I lower the main enough to pull the line and do slab/jiffy reef of the sail. I then take the excess line just created and tie the rearmost grommet of the reefing set to the boom. It is fast and easy, and gives another reason to like the mizzen.
