Re: [bolger] Re: Interested in hearing from owners who have built or considering Whalewatcher

Since this is really a Whalewatcher thread it would be nice to convert the title of it, if somebody knows how. For the person inquiring, whose first post I missed, I am the builder who completed and launched the first finished Whalewatcher (so far as we know), in Annapolis last spring. It was actually something of a combination of the first commissioned boat, being built for the tall George Anger family when he died, and another being built by Tim Anderson in San Diego. I got the various parts together here in northern New York. I think it's a wonderful boat. Pat Connor, the owner, has not yet reported fully on its upwind performance but I have little doubt that it is highly satisfactory from the initial experiences. Mostly light airs on the Sunday when Phil and Susanne were aboard, but we did have strong winds bringing her to Annapolis from the actual launch site up in the Severn River the afternoon before. We did not have any way to keep the boom from swinging too far forward, nor a proper parrel for the yard, and so the main was not at all well, but it did prove stiff and fast. I rigged a sort of back-haul for the boom next morning and now know a tiny bit about a balance lug. Am eager to participate in any discussion of this design, which I think deserves many more iterations. ---Mason

First, thanks for your interest in serving our veterans. This is a righteous thing to be doing. I can see the generous cabin space and Birdwatcher configuration working out well to get them on the water safely yet in a 'real' sailing boat.

One was launched earlier this year. I understood it to be the first. Can't remember where, but another almost ready for the water has been available for sale within the last year. IMO a google search would turn up that ad.

Always looked interesting to me because I'm 6'3" and when originally commissioned, Bolger was directed to design for someone even taller.

I live near a Vets home in Washington State in PT Orchard in particular and am thinking about building this boat to take a few vets out for sailing. I think that it can accomidate wheel chairs, but having a boat that can be capt by me or my friends and getting vets out on the water a good thing.
