Re: Modifications on Concepts
My feeling is that if the modified design makes a SUBSTANTIAL AND
SIGNIFICANT improvement* in the original design as opposed to a copy
with minor modifications made to get around the copyright law
technicalities, a redesign is o.k. After all, most designs (whether
they be boats, cars, roller coasters, etc.) are reworks to some
degree and in some way; of those similar things that have gone on
before.
**Building method, less potential building cost, significantly larger
(for a reason), safer, faster, more seaworthy, better rig, etc.
However, redraw the Micro shorten it an inch, widen it an inch,
lighten it by a pound, rename it the Micron and offer the plan for
sale for $20.00 is morally not o.k., but technically might get around
the law by stating the changes were "improvements".

List,
If a person sees a boat design - either in plans, cartoons or in person and
that sight inspires a similar design. Then the similar design is developed
and plans are drawn and offered for sale. Is that an infringement of a
copyright?
