I have a number of older issues of MAIB dating from 1999 (single issue)
up to a mostly complete set of 2007. Many have been given away and
some are intended for my permanent libray. That all being said, is
their someone who is interested in having what is left of them? I have
a difficult time contemplating just throwing them away and would rather
find another reader as I consider MAIB the single most interesting
magazine to be published. It is the only subscription that I pay for
and I will continue to subscribe as long as it is published. I will
put them all in a box and send to you just to know they have been well
recieved.

Lon,

I think Robb can take care of himself. Most of his articles, I like enough
to read. A couple are among my favorites. Some of them repeat things he's
said before (not sure how many times we need to read about stalking the
mighty mullet; I take his point, and we don't have mullet here, so the
practical part is wasted). Some ramble. Some go on about the merits of
Mercedes diesel cars, and so on, which I find a little mystifying for a
boat magazine.

There can be too much of a good thing, but hey, if Bob doesn't get
submissions, he has to run with what he gets. No one can say Robb ain't
prolific, and most of Robb White's contributions are good.

So if anyone is getting bashed, it's Bob, for the surfeit of Robb, and I'm
not bashing Bob either. He has a laissez-faire editorial approach.

I get cranky when *anyone* shows up multiple times in every MAIB - or even
once in every one, as happened a few years back with some interminable
series on building some boat that went on for what seemed like 80
installments. Also, multipart logs of trips here and there with bad photos
and indeterminate location irk me. I don't read them. I at least begin
reading most of Mr White's submissions and then decide whether or not to
finish.

Not just 'someone', but Rollin
dal Piaz, fellow Bolger Group member.

http://tinyurl.com/emfy

Indeed, Yonder is not a simple boat,
but it is the latest culmination of
the best of recent Bolger design 'themes',
well suited, [I see] for 'relatively safe'
and simple long term voyaging.
Hang in there, they'll show up, well worth the wait.. I get mine 2-3
weeks after some of the folks on the east coast. Sometimes more than a
month goes by then I'll get two issues within a day or so. Other times
the latest issue will arrive a week before the previous issue does. None
of this caused by MAIB, it's all courtesy of the US Postal system.....

And the big boat is Yonder, 30' LOD, 10' 4" beam, 17,000 lbs. disp.
designed for someone who wanted and updated and improved Romp.

How long does it take for the first issue to arrive after you send
your check? I've been waiting almost 2 months. Can anyone tell me
what the big boat Phil is currently discussing is? Thanks JW
Peter L has mentioned the name Windermere, so I believe it is. These
previews are hard on those of us a little farther down the postal
pipeline. Now I am waiting for both Woodenboat and MAIB. All I need is
for somebody to mention a Dynamite Payson article in the next
Boatbuilder and I will be camped in front of the mailbox.

In the UK, MAIB stands for Marine Accident
Investigation Branch. Nothing to do with Messing
About in Boats.

On second thoughts, maybe there is a connection . . .

Yard?
When I lived on 26th street, a Klepper was the only boat that fit in
the elevator or subway.

Moving to the suburbs of brooklyn, bigger boats were possible, just
had to carry them up two flights of stairs to the roof. Of course
you wouldn't leave tools on the roof. For many years my brother
built and berthed boats on the 4th floor, they had be raised and
lowered through the window, quite a sight.

Floating the Apple builds boats around the waterfront of NY,
generally working out of 40' containers, which serve as shop,
storage, and berth:

A little clarification, Jeffery.

I only live in NYC part-time. All my boat building, sailing, surfing
and fishing takes place at the far eastern end of Long Island in a
small town called Montauk.

My boats, the one at the beach and the one in the driveway, also get
a lot of attention, and I have to say I like it. Petty as it might
be, when I come sailing through the surf with a nice striper in the
boat, I look forward to the admiring inquiries.

David

No, not "Messing About In Boats" but messing about in boat, my boat lil'winnie.

After spending the day sanding spars, I went down to the beach to
wash off the saw dust and unrig my teal.

As I was drying off after my swim, I noticed a few birds working and
decided to give it a try while there was still light, so at about 7PM
I pushed out through the small surf and began beating against an East
wind and trolling a blue and silver plug.

At first there was nothing. Birds were scattered and no fish were
showing for 30 or 40 minutes. But as the light failed, the birds
concentrated about 800 yards down wind of me, so I fell off and
headed for them.

Even before I hit the main concentration I had a fish on. Five
minutes later, I had a nice bluefish aboard. I barely had the clutch
on the reel set when I hooked up again. This time the fish was bigger
and harder to get in the boat, ( I don't carry a gaff or net, so I
have to grab 'em by the tail.) I also wanted to retie my lure, and by
the time I finished with that I was well down wind of the birds,
which was now a flock of hundreds working hard over churning fish.

I set to beating upwind again, hoping one more hookup would yield a
bass. As I neared the birds, the rod bent again -- another blue. I
headed for the beach and picked up one more, this one near 10 pounds.

Fortunately, I paid full price for my teal plans, and the book as
well, (not to mention a few more sets and books,) so my enjoyment was
unfettered by guilt. But even if the boat itself had been stolen, I
have happily traded my felons' guilt for an evening like that!

YIBB,

David
