apologia

To the List:

It was I who inadvertantly sent the message below to the list last
week. I did not intend it as a flame. It was meant as a private
correspondence and as humor (admittedly pretty weak). When I
realized my error I was deeply embarrassed. I was also shamed
by the fact that I had posted a big attachment that would cause
some members problems when they tried to download the thing.
In the brave and noble spirit of one who regularly plants his
virtual foot in his virtual mouth, I unsubscribed and hid under a
rock until today. I did not anticipate that my error would inspire
such an emotionally heated exchange within the list, and I
regret my part in stimulating such an exchange.

In my own defense, I would like to point out that I posted a single
page from a magazine to which I have subscribed for something
like five years. I did not "pilfer" anything. As I expressed to one
list member privately, seeing what is available in MAIB might
attract new subscribers. Also, the cartoon shown is for an
uncompleted plan which, I suspect, the designer presented in the
hope that a reader would express an interest in commissioning.
It not a construction plan and only barely a study plan. It is
another of Bolger's facinating ideas, that, without a sponsor, will
go no further. Finally, as such a trifling bit both of the magazine
and Bolger's body of work, the posting qualifies as "fair use", imho.

I am not in the business of violating anyone's intellectual property
rights, least of all Bolger's; indeed, I am certain that I have not,
either legally, ethically or even metaphysically. Whatever opinion
the reader holds concerning this is his (or her) own, of course. I
begrudge no one the right to an opinion. However, shrill and
strident posturing on either side of this argument helps no one: not
Bolger, not MAIB, and certainly not us poor slobs who just want
to build boats. Perhaps, as has been suggested, we should once
again turn our focus to sawdust and goop and dreams... As for me,
I'm going to crawl back under my rock for a while,

Apologies,

david galvin
