Re: [bolger] Topaz (planing)
Fritz,
I would doubt there is much difference - you're right, it never really
shifts on plane. On my sneakeasy, the water shoots right out perfectly
perpendicularly, and if you stand up, you can watch it move aft as speed
builds. I think it ends up just at your feet, with the knee about 1 foot
off the water and the aft end maybe 3 inched below - not much angle.
I get about 22 on my 25 Hp Envinrude, whereas I got 17 on my 15 Hp Merc. I
did just reglass the sides, and I intend to flip it over an make the bottom
really slick. I think I should get more - there's a lot of "skin" in the
little at plane.
I'll look at my photos...

Brad,
Interesting that you don't feel the change in attitude in Topaz, even with
its taper aft (there's no rocker aft on Topaz, is there?). My Sneakeasy's
attitude (angle of attack) does change but it is very very subtle. I can't
feel the change myself, but if I peer over the side I can see that the
water entry has shifted aft. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of my
Sneakeasy underway at speed (Seth?), or I would probably be as surprised as
you were. There are photos of 3 other Sneakeasies underway though at
http://www.alaska.net/~fritzf/Boats/Sneakeasy/Sneakeasy.htm(you have to
click to the Toucan Canvas page to see that one going fast), as well as a
broadside photo of mine at rest for comparison. The angle of attack
definitely changes a little, even if I can't perceive it. Its really quite
amazing not to perceive any change in the angle of attack as you add power
- not like any other fast boat I've ever been on (OK, I've never been
aboard a destroyer).
Gregg, is anything different about the attitude on the step-chine version
of Sneakeasy? Got any broadside photos of yours going fast for comparison?
How fast have you got yours going now anyway?
