No, they do not work through Paypal.

Hi Andy,

Being from Canada, I sent a money order in US funds made out to PCB
and Friends. This cost me $6, plus the exchange rate, to have made up
at my local bank.

No, it is not the fact that you asked a question that influenced the
way you've been treated here.
(It's a freakin' row boat, not the Queen Mary. You get a couple of
pages of blue prints with all dimensions, a page or two of building
notes and the possibility of getting any questions answered by the
designer. It's a measley $40. Spend it or don't, but stop whining
about it.)

It's the fact that you are an insensitive ass that influenced the way
you've been treated here.

Typo! I meant Mike and Rick's comments.

Bolger certainly knew of this possibility. In Small Boats he notes that a commercial builder with "elastic ethics" produced fiberglass Gloucester Light Dories using one of the plywood ones for a mold.

As for other matters related to this thread, I heartily endorse Mike and Eric's comments.

Eighteen years ago I sent Phil Bolger a letter about low power planing boats and referencing an article from Small Boat Journal on the panga boats from the west coast of Mexico. He sent a very curtious and thoughtful reply and included a blueprint of his power yawl. He said if I ever built the boat, could I please send him $35, otherwise not to bother if I didn't build it.
Unfortunately, I developed chronic fatigue syndrome and the boat never was built; however, that letter and those plans inspired me to design boats for my own enjoyment. It was a way of coping with my chronic fatigue, something I could do while the world around me existed in a fog. I always felt I owed Phil at least double what he had asked for for the power yawl plans and I regret I never wrote him and let him know what a large impact he had on my life. I will send Susanne double what he had asked me. It's the least I can do.
Fred
Firstly, I've never seen any of Phil's plans that didn't state "to build one boat", up front.  But more to the point, this discussion seems to be purely academic, because I can't imagine anyone wanting to build the same boat twice.  Boatbuilding is a hobby not some kind of economic model intended to be optimized.  I've built eleven boats and I don't want or intend to build any of them again.

So Greg, buy the plans, build the boat and if after that you still want to build another of the same design, then let's have this debate.

Furthermore, I take strong issue regarding you tasteless, insensitive remarks regarding Phil Bolger's death.  First you judge the fees he charges for his designs and then you take the license to judge his life.  You didn't know him.  It's none of your business how he lived or died.   I think you owe Phil, his wife and family and this group an apology.

Rick

So good to hear. I think Susanne could do very well, and promote Phil's legacy properly by opening it up just a little bit more in line with today's market. Nothing crazy, just a website and a list. Email would be great too but not an absolute necessity.

I've spent over $100 for kayak plans, $40 is dirt cheap. And the kayak plans as well as all other plans I've ever seen have the same restriction of it being a license for one boat. You can barely print the plans and send them for that price with no profit at all.

Gene T. Nailed it on the head. It takes a lot of work to design a good boat, and to see someone else profit off of that work is as close to theft as you can get. One or two boats and that's about all anyone should expect to build off of a set of plans. That's standard for just about all designers I believe.

Doc,
I think the main reason for the restriction is to prevent somebody from going into production with their boat plan.  Ones and twos can't be policed but a company producing boats could be shut down.

Think of it this way... Your not buying pieces of paper. You are
buying the rights to build one boat.

Inexpensive plans are inexpensive because the designer hopes to sell
many of them. It's easy to invest several hundred hours into a design.
This investment is repaid in numerous plan sales. Even then, I doubt
it's a living for many designers.

Any stock plans are a bargain. Ever priced out a custom design? A
$40 set of plans is a real deal. A good bottle of wine cost more then
that. Refills aren't free either!

If the plans cost $40 i doubt there is any money to be made. If support for the build is included every set of plans mailed is a money looser. We all have to eat.

There is something to be said for the old ways of doing business. After all, are we going to start building next week and are already paying a construction crew? Nah. Life is meant to be slow. Would we be boat people if not? :D

I ditto what Harry said.

Patience polite plain paper postal mail has worked best in the past.

Lots to be said for the new ways of doing business too.

As a matter of fact I would like to get started building right away.
I've been trying to buy the plans since August.

At this stage I'm talking with another designer about a semi custom
plan. I would like the Dakota plans as a reference because it's the
boat that inspired the idea.

I've bought plans from PCB in the past. Plans for Tennessee. I asked
this group how much they though the plans were and got some good
answers. I sent Phil a check for that amount and a couple weeks later
the plans arrived with a nice note stating that the sum was close
enough.

....I'm just trying to buy some boat plans here guys.

That has been my experience as well.

How can one send the money when there is no place to locate the price,
or whether the plans are actually still available? In my case Storm
Petrel. So I just gave up and moved to another plan from a seller who
has all the information on-line.

I found someone to send a fax for me. We'll see what happens.

Yes, I'm fully aware of Phil's passing.

RonB.
Bolger & Friends have never done business via e-mail.

They have always done business via snail mail or fax.

I suggest that if finding a fax machine is not possible, you drop a
line via snail mail.

In case you are unaware, please note that Phil Bolger passed away a
few months ago, and in addition to what surely is still a difficult
personal time, his partner is still setting up how she will keep the
business going with him gone.

That's great but what if you live in a rural area and don't have
easy access to fax machine? And, no way to get a return fax? What kind
of support is available if you can't even buy the plans? I've sent 3
emails offering to send money for Dakota plans. All I want them for is
for study purposes. I'm willing to take the chance of sending a check,
but I just need an amount! This is frustrating.
