[bolger] Re: Polyester vs. Glass
I see the chart didn't print as hoped. The left hand column is glass,
the right Xynole. Sorry! Warren

Parker, can be obtained from Defender industries: 800-628-8225 or
http://www.DefenderUS.com
It is said to be more abrasion resistant than glass. A second feature which
is appealing to me is that it is described as more "user friendly" in that it
does not cause itching when sanded.
Some specs from the Defender Catalog
Glass
Xynole
Tensile strength 79000 61000
Abrasion resistance Fair Good
Resin Impregnation Fair Good (Xynole
takes more resin to fill weave)
Flexural Strength 24000 15000
I haven't used it myself, but the plan is to use a layer of Xynole over
double planked (1/4 + 1/4) ply on the bottom of Oldshoe. As far as I can
tell, it only comes in 4 oz weight.
Regards, Warren
I've always liked the way polyester cloth sounded. It's a little pricey
for my next boat, both in it's cost and it's need for epoxy (takes as
much as 10 oz fiberglass cloth). Only place I've seen it is Defender
Industries www.defenderus.com
Now if I could just remember where I lost my Sharpie book...

Fellow Bolger Boat Builders --
Polyester cloth? I've never heard of such a thing, (until "The Sharpie Book".)
What is it?
Where does it come from?
If it's so much better, why doesn't everybody use it?
