Re: Chinese Gaff

Bruce,

Thanks for the informative reply. Sounds like an effective rig.

It works. What can I say,

1) I have used it, and it works as advertised. But, I am not the kind
of person that sails a lot. (Should I be ashamed of being mostly
hanging out in the marina? BTW, the Micro Navigator cabin makes
simply an EXCELLENT marina hangout. My marina berth is in the shadow
of the SBC Global baseball stadium, and they generously share their
high speed wireless internet to moochers like me, while I lounge in
the warm sunny well cushioned 6'6" berths listening to tunes and or
napping, drinking tea and eating chocolate. Did I mention that the
short hull length makes a huge difference is berthing fees, I pay
$101/mo which is an issue in downtown S.F.? Heck, this comes with one
parking permit, and people in this neighborhood happily pay $125/mo to
park just their cars.)

2) The amazing thing about the sail rig is that it sets a huge amount
of cloth (on one sail), and it also reefs down to a small sail single
handedly from the comfort of inside the cabin.

3) At first I didn't try the tapered battens, but earlier this year I
took the battens off and tapered them. The tapering is intended to
allow the batten to bend more towards the luff, creating an
aerodynamic shape. Since my tapering I had the polypropylene line
which I had lashed the pully for one of the top yard halyards sun rot,
and fall off. I need to lower the mast and relash the pully, not a
big task, but other things in life are beckoning right now!

>Do you get a good set to the sail, or do the sheets tend to bunch up the leech?

No problems with the sheeting.

> Do you use jaws on the battens - are these essential to the rig?

Yes, they are essential.

> Ever try Hasler-style single sheets?

No, I rigged mine per PB&F plans, and it works.
Bruce and anyone else with a Chinese gaff rig,

How has this rig worked out for you? Do you get a good set to the sail, or do the sheets tend to bunch up the leech? Do you use jaws on the battens - are these essential to the rig? Ever try Hasler-style single sheets?

Does anyone have an update on how Fritz is making out with this rig on Double Eagle?
