Gosh, I always thought that was the whole point of the exercise!:)

P.S. I've capsized, pitch-poled and done other things as well. "Education is
expensive" a farmer once told me with what was great equanimity under the
circumstances.

Hello Col - I don't know all the ramifications of changing things around by
adding the keel - I will be adding more ballast and sponsons which sounds
easier to me than a keel - and I do want to beach the boat. We also hit a
sand bar in Pine Island sound -and stopped dead in our tracks - because of
the split rig and flat bottom we were able to use the sails turn the boat
around on her botton and sail off again without ever getting out of the boat.
You couldn't do that with a keel. As for confidence - Since we capsized I
learned that the above statement just might not be accurate - I was pretty
confident - I am an experienced sailor - I had never in all my sailing career
capsized before - and never expected to ....you never never know. She went
over so easily that it was stunning. A relatively small mizzen knocked that
big boat flat - beyond flat actually. When I think back to the sails before
that fateful day - I realize that she was ( without any additional ballast
from gear) positively tiddly. I didn't worry about it too much because I had
always heard that even if she did get knocked down - she would spring back
up. Not. Steve Anderson
