Don
Rod,

I'm in Brizzy. I'm fairly sure there's a gif cutting of Navigator in the Bolger Cartoons group files. I'm unsure where the Mk II cuttings are. There are bits and pieces all over, but mind you they are only bits and pieces - you need the drawings/plans/guide. I think Myles could tell you much about the Mk II as IIRC he has those plans. Bruce has built a Navigator from the get up, and Gene is currently doing so, perhaps they will chime in on that one. I don't believe I've heard of anyone converting/modifying an extant standard Micro into either of the upgrades which is what the upgrade plans are actually for. I think about doing it to my old one... but usually conclude she's too old to be worth the trouble, so one day may do it to the old dear's lead keel. On erecting the mast: I've heard both sides about equally it seems. Mine is not a good example as the builder went to industrial pipe about ten years before PB&F's Nav mod. Mine is altered further from the plans in a number of ways - mostly things left out - but relevant here is that the mainsail has slugs hanked on to a tensioned wire abaft the mast instead of sail track. Once in a hard gybe the saddle securing the tensioned wire aloft was yanked almost off the mast. Now, if I could lower, repair, and raise that rig whilst afloat at anchor in a particularly rolly anchorage that day, then a wooden one would be almost a one hand job! You just need to think ahead about what the mast will want to do, where the weight will be, and carefully walk it up or down.

Did you see Robert Ayliffe's article on carbon fibre spars in AABB #67? He's got the Micro main mast weight down to 4.5kg from the wooden 18kg! My pipe is not much different to the spec'd wooden weight I'd bet, but it don't taper, so a higher cg with greater moment of inertia at the distal end to man-handle. The Nav's is taller again!

Col is building a Micro on the NSW north coast - standard IIRC.

See how you go. Others here will help, and know where to point you, eg like Bruce has done above: "scans of the changes were put in the Bolger4 group photo section under "Micro Navigator""

If you view Yahoo groups on the web page there are two search boxes: one by message number, and one by keyword(s). Use them to search the message archives where there is much of value to find.

When did you obtain the plans? Oh, don't omit the flotation. It doesn't take up too much room; mostly well out of the way in any case.

cheers
Graeme

Hey Rod check out these sites.
In this one the builder modifies a standard Micro.
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/02/articles/oink2/index.htm

Pdf of an article about the design.
http://www.boatdesign.com/micro/files/navigator1.pdf

In this site the builder leaks out the covering secret.  Sssh!  Don't tell anyone, its two layers of 10oz glass!

Rod,

the MkII modifications/ upgrades would likely be best built that way well before reaching the rigging stage although the upgrades for both Mk II and the Navigator were both meant for retrofitting.

MkII is decked to the bow with a forward hatch. The pivoting mast is in a tabernacle fitted to the outside of the modified bow. The mast is retained by a latch something like the Long Micro arrangement. Other than that the sail rig is pretty much unchanged. A rounded "anti-kerplumphing" pad is fitted to the bottom at the bow - not sure, but there may also be some change to the keel there. If fitted with the bouyancy foam as designed I don't think Mk II has much more internal room. Raising/dropping the rig is easier, and the bow may be quieter.

The Navigator is a quantum leap from a standard Micro. Far more seaworthy, much increased internal accomodations, comfort, and storage. Industrial aluminium pipe masts, large gaff-junk rig.

There's info spread throughout the files and photo sections of the various other bolger groups (other groups were necessary earlier when yahoo limited storage). There's a great deal in the archive of posts to this group and linked - use the group search function.

Plans available - contact by mail or fax. Patience may be necessary -- I think the upgrades were priced at $50.

How far into your Micro build are you?

Graeme

I think you are speaking of the Bolger redesign of Micro, numbered
design 426B. This was discussed back on November 2, 2004 you can look
in the group archive for the discussion thread with the subject line
"Micro Upgrade". I just looked, and there was mention that scans of
the changes were put in the Bolger4 group photo section under "Micro
Navigator".

Rod,

What is the wind like where you are? I think the updates are nice. IIRC the main things are another hatch so you don’t have to go across the cabin  to get to the front well, a mast in tabernacle setup, and a larger sail (Phil’s adaptation of the junk approach). The mast is farther forward and needs to be lighter. I rarely feel the need for more sail. I’ve planed Micro on the stock sails and usually have to reef in the afternoon winds near the coast. I need help with the mast (okay when I built it 20 years ago) so the tabernacle is attractive. I would rather stay with my wooden mast so I’m still thinking it over.
