Re: Micro mast tabernacle question

Here's a good source on tabernacles.

Not going to give you much hint on the pivot placement. For that you are probably just going to have to build the mast and the tabernacle and clamp it to the right rake and then mark and drill.

Cheers, Brian

I agree that building the tabernacle from 2x6 makes sense. I must
point out that handling my Micro mast up and down about a dozen times
single handed without a tabernacle and this has not been much of a
problem.

I have missed if you have said whether you are doing the triangular
sail, or are you doing the gaff sail? The problems with the gaff sail
is that to lower the mast (with or without the tabernacle) you need to
loosen the batten jaws from the mast, and then the four vertical
halyard topping lift lines get hopelessly tangled while hanging
horizontal. That tangle trouble far exceeds the trouble of handling
the mast.

Hi,

I've got a 16' boat with STAYED mast that has only 3 x 1 1/2 sides to the tabernacle. The bolt is central and about 2" from the top. The mast only extends about 10" below the pivot and the end of the mast wedges onto the base of the tabernacle (it looks something like a two pronged fork). The mast rake is determined by the rake of the tabernacle base.

Of course this is a stayed mast and so the forces are completely different to your unstayed mast.

I also found this quote from Jim Michalak:

"Caprice has the tabernacle setup that I first saw on Karl James' sharpie. The mainsail is 190 square feet, balanced lug. The mast is fairly short, stowing within the length of the boat when lowered. Chuck demonstrated putting up the mast, maybe a 15 second operation. I've been drawing these for a while on different boats but this is the first one I know of to get built and used. I'm greatly relieved that is all works so well. Before you decide to tack a tabernacle like this onto your boat, be advised that the tabernacle posts go clear to the hull bottom with big bolts all around a beefy bulkhead."

Maybe there is some wisdom you could borrow from this design.

Regards,

Andrew

I have a tabernacle on my 16' boat.. it's made of 2x6.  mast is about 16' total length. A lower pin thru the mast can determine the rake,,,,,,, and it's "bow'.....:)  Bough's are on trees !!

Hi, Progressing with my Micro. I am thinking of building a tabernacle into the bough transom and would like some opinions on my ideas because I have heard of people having difficulties erecting masts.
I would make two posts from 4"x4" oregon @ 4" long each.
I would have 2' above the deck height and the other 2' built into the bough transom. The posts would stand parallel with the mast sandwiched between them and hinged near the top. I would have a locking arrangement to hold the mast when erected.
What I need to know is how far back should I have the pivot point from the centre of the supports to get the correct rake in the mast? I am guessing that it should be less than 1"?

Hi, Progressing with my Micro. I am thinking of building a tabernacle into the bough transom and would like some opinions on my ideas because I have heard of people having difficulties erecting masts.
I would make two posts from 4"x4" oregon @ 4" long each.
