Re: [bolger] hollow mast progress reponse

I have been very interested in the birds mouth spar, as it
appeared to be the only way I was going to have enough spruce to
finish all the spars and rails for the great cartopper
extravaganza. I have been trying to figure out how to strengthen
at the partners as a solid plug seemed very difficult to fit just
right. This approach seems like it might work, only I can't quite
picture it with four staves. I think I would use 8 strips one for
each stave and play around with dimensions and miter angles on a
test piece before gluing up. Once I had tapers and miter angle
cuts done on the reinforcement staves I would glue those on first
and let them dry before gluing up the spar.

Like dick at talkingcrowI also would appreciate a little more
description of the failure mode in the late lamented. A
magnifying glass does a lot when looking at this stuff.

Fraser,
It does not have to be solid. Just put 4 tapered (both ends) staves (same
thickness as mast staves) in that area inside the mast. Make them in length
about 20 times the thickness and add to each end a taper of at least 8 times
the thickness. If you are careful, you can make up a long box with mitred
corners and the tapers to the inside. Make it a hair oversize and plane the
last few thou. off so it fits inside the mast perfectly when you glue the
whole up.

Leave a large enough center opening to run your halyards.
