[bolger] Re: marka's modest adventure
Fellas,
The Windsprint hull was originally Phil Bolger's bow
steering experiment Query, of which he wrote something like
if it didn't work at least it would make somebody a good rowboat.
A rowboat model is good for electric power, since in the
smallest trollers the horsemuscle available is about the
same. The salesman said 30 pounds thrust equals about 2 HP,
but in Douglas Little's book 'Electric Boats' he shows my
little MinnKota works out to about .4 HP.
The motor is just slung over the gunwale and tilted down
under the hull. Only one battery now, but the boat could
easily take a second or, with careful stowage of other gear,
a third. This afternoon, I've been looking at cruising
guides and charts for a longer trip. The Columbia estuary is
full of sloughs, islands and wildlife sanctuaries far from
the shipping lanes.
I've read the average pleasure boat trip is about 20 miles,
so three 105 ah batts could get me there.
