Re: MJ hollow mast

Why don't you just glue, ahead of time, some little blocks or strips
on the wide staves one side stave thickness in from the edge. WHen
you
clamp, the side staves will rest against them and not go any further
in.

I bought three staves for my 5 inch square Martha Jane mast with the
intention of making it solid - now I want to go hollow to save weight
aloft. The middle stave won't provide enough timber to make the
rebated box section outlined in the mast and spar making booklet, but
there is a diagram
of a 20 foot hollow 5 inch mast in the Fast Motor Sailor plans where
the side staves just butt up flat against the for and aft staves. Is
this still an acceptable method for building hollow masts?
Any tips out there as to how to prevent the side staves slipping
inwards when the clamps are applied? Perhaps glue it up in stages,
i.e. narrow side stay to base one day, other side the next, top after
that?
