Re: [bolger] Micro cockpit layout options

Rod,
On my micro the main cabin is separated from the main cabin my a board.  This has made me much happier when at sea as the cabin can effectively become a buoyancy tank.

If you leave the open step in cockpit you could put in some lockers in the sides to hold things back.  I have loose boxes held back by diagonal ropes, not the best.  Things do get wet but the things I want to keep dry I put in the cabin.

Hi again,
You can see my progress in photos numbered 101-120 "Rod Cahills Micro". I have framed the cockpit ready to install flotation, standing pit, etc, etc. Just wondering what options others have done as far as changing the setup of the cockpit. I aren't too fond of the idea of having everything below the deck open to rain, spray, etc whilst having the cockpit lid open. I would like to hear of good and bad alterations that have been made. Looking at Ross Lillistones Micro sailing on youtube I notice that he has built his in completely??

Rod,

I don't think you have read my previous posts, and my emails, correctly. I did not approve of the alterations I was asked to make to the "Micro" which I built, and she is not my boat.

My opinion is that Phil Bolger's original design, and the original layout, is/are the correct way to go. Any change to the original cockpit arrangement (i.e. a flat deck with a hatch on the centreline) represents a degradation of the design - especially in terms of seaworthiness and safety. I have a page of calculations relating to the emergency floatation installed in the modified (foot-well type cockpit - as seen in the Youtube video on my website at www.baysidewoodenboats.com.au ) "Micro" I finally delivered. it is revealing.

My message to everybody is this - Phil Bolger was able to design masterpieces in the first instance - do not change a thing (except, perhaps, plywood thickness)

"Micro", as originally designed, is a superb boat - it would take a genius to improve her.
